Why does this game constantly nerf/buff weapons? I really want to know the thought process that’s goes into the nerfs/buffs It seems every season they’re massive changes

  • So in free to play games, there's been a trend to change the meta to retain playerbase by keeping things interesting. I remember watching a seminar last year by one of the path of exile developers during GDC that described 'Meta mechanics' Here's the seminar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM_5S55jUzk In recent seasons, Bungie has given us the seasonal artifact which has mods that change and determine the meta seemingly for both PvE and PvP. My guess is that this is intended to be their way of keeping things fresh and retaining a player base using the same method of meta mechanics described in that seminar. Imagine every weapon laid out along a graph. the graph raises on weapons that are closer to meta usage and lowers for weapons that aren't useable that season. What Bungie does wrong is their graph has sharp points where only one or maybe 2 weapons are in the meta. and if you use anything else, you're at a disadvantage. This makes it so you're unable to "play the game your way" as they would put it and creates frustration and a sense of helplessness for those who don't want to conform to their strict meta changes. I'm not going to tell Bungie how to make their game, but how it seems the community wants it is to soften those meta peaks on that metaphorical graph so that a variety of weapon types are still viable. That may not be the game Bungie wants to make, however, and that is something we have to live with by either using Hard Light or leaving the game.

  • Its their way of getting you to play more. The average player really only farms weapons that they want, whether its meta or something off the wall. After a while they change up the meta and sandbox. They typically overpower unused weapons, ie SIDEARMS. Before a few months ago, who the hell used sidearms?? Very few players....so guess what people began farming??? Sidearms. .... it dilutes player hours for their investors. "Artificial numbers," if you will. They scream "balance" and so many folks fall for their BS. And yes, weapons ARE out of "balance" but done so intentionally. Some players will swear up and down that constant hard-core major nerfs need to happen every 6 months or "the game will die." Thats BS as well. So one may think, "well I'll farm it all and be done." Great strategy actually. And now you know why they are capping Legendary weapons!! It all comes back to playing time. If people log-on, it adds to their numbers.....REGARDLESS if it takes you 10 seconds or 10 mins to load into the tower. The game is already dead. Look at eververse. BungLe used to do a lot more w less. Not anymore. Its about the almighty dollar!!
