Weapon retirement gives me no incentive to try.

So, after the release of Taken King in D1, random rolls and weapon infusion throughout the rest of the games life is what kept me engaged and involved with the game. I never ran out of material to grind for, mainly because I was always looking for new and creative ways to gear up for whatever new events came down the line from Bungie. D2, was such a departure from the system I loved that I set the game aside with no intention of returning, however the changes made in Forsaken and Shadowkeep were so overwhelmingly positive, I repurchased the game for PC on steam, and am currently undertaking the grind for new and exciting legendary weapons. With the return of weapon retirement that we saw in the transition of D1 year 1 to year 2, being implemented as a permanent feature for the remainder of D2’s life cycle, I have zero incentive to continue playing. This system essentially devalues any work put into acquiring a specific roll through hours of dedication, thus making continued gameplay pointless. Myself and many of my friends love to spend hours playing Destiny, when we have something to show for it. By retiring weapons, you take that away, along with the motivation to continue playing. If this change does get permanently implemented, I do think this will be the last straw for my faith in the franchise, and will most likely hang up the space magic for good this time. I do hope Bungie heavily considers another way to move forward with weapon economy, because taking away hard work from your player base isn’t the way to do it. With all respect, thank you Bungie for the hard work you’ve done so far, I just beg you not to do this.

Yeah! What's the point of putting the hours into getting a perfect roll of _____ if it becomes totally obsolete? Weapons should be the extension of the player, should be respected, and not cut off for a lazy excuse of forcing you to grind new weapons for being usable. It just shouldn't.

    • I was considering completing the last 3 Crucible Pinnacle weapon quests I have, because there is very little left to chase in this season and the game. With the Director's Cut announcement, I have zero reason now to do so now. I'm not chasing after a weapon that will be nerfed (even if it is next or a future season) to non usability. This decision does not respect my play time and certainly will mean I won't be spending money going forward on Expansions in D2 or D3.

    • Yeah, this is really the nail in the coffin for me. The constant nerfing of popular weapons and buffing of unpopular ones has gone beyond the excuse of balancing the game and is obviously just shifting the meta to keep people grinding. I worked very hard to get my perfect roll on some of these weapons and if they are not able to be leveled then they become obsolete and all that time spent grinding for them is wasted. This game wants to pretend it is an RPG but it fails to let the player feel powerful for very long and never allows you to have a favorite weapon or piece of armor. You might get little glimpses of it with certain weapons and armor but as soon as a high percentage of players take advantage of that meta you can bet it will get nerfed. RPG's have always been about using your favorite gear and feeling powerful, but this game only gives you that in small portions. Compelling content should drive people to play the game, not the grind for whatever weapon or armor they decide is powerful this week. Grinding for emotes and ornaments was not enough to keep me interested in this season and taking away my hard-earned weapon rolls is the last straw. I get it, changing weapon and armor meta is way easier to develop than creating new content. It just isn't compelling and makes the time spent playing the game feel wasted.

    • They want to take our weapons away so they can reskin them and resell them to us in later crap content. The majority of D2 is reskinned D1 content. They are lazy, greedy and bad at game content. Trials is a total copy of d1 so why did it take them a year to bring it back. It shows how bad the devs are in this game.

    • Bungie seems to have forgotten that grinding for its own sake isn’t fun. We grind to get specific things. Making the weapons we grind for irrelevant make the grind nothing but a chore.

      • I made a post about this here if you want to read the whole thing, but basically my criticism is that the current RNG of the game is too harsh to put a time limit on acquiring god rolls. If there is not a fundamental rework of loot in some way to accommodate the new system of rotating gear, unlucky people will not be able to get the weapons they want before they just become obsolete.

I completely agree. I too enjoy looking for creative and interesting ways to use the weapons, even if it isn't "meta" (actually, I rarely care about the meta, but I do enjoy finding what works for me and my role in my teams). The only way I think they can avoid making this an absolutely terrible experience is to significantly improve the experience of farming/grinding for loot. There are a few things I think they can do to accomplish this, actually, but the most important is probably making legendary weapons much more plentiful in the game. If they are going to insist on light cap on infusion, then here's what I would like to see: 1. Multiple legendary weapon per strike. Like, 4-5 legendary weapons per run. I'd like to see mini-bosses and Wanted enemies always drop legendary loot, and then the boss drop both legendary armor and a legendary weapon. Heck, put some hidden chests in strikes as well. 2. Guaranteed legendary loot from heroic public events. This would be a much greater incentive for people to actually finish the heroic public events. 3. Guaranteed legendary loot from lost sector bosses. Even just a single guaranteed legendary drop for a lost sector boss would be better than the current state of affairs. 4. Fixing the collections. Give every single weapon and piece of armor in the game a curated "basic version" roll, then let that basic version be the version we can pull from the collections. Every single exotic, blue, and grey item in the game has a basic, "standard" version. It should be the same for legendary gear as well. I feel like these are basic necessities, if they are going to move forward down this path. Otherwise, the loot drops are simply too rare, and the RNG too frustrating to deal with the grind. If they're going to cycle loot, then make it easier to acquire and use a wide variety of loot.

      • The problem is the weapon roll collecting is thr only reason most of us keep playing. The seasonal content itself is ddisgusting. We tolerate the content for the weapon drops. Other games that retire your stuff probably have much better content and actual reasons to do it.

        • Agree, anyone defending this decision, comparing it to The Taken King has forgotten how boring that era was. Everyone using hung jury , 1K stare blah blah blah, no variety, nothing fun. And just like that era, they will probably eventually bring our favorites back later. Kind of a ridiculous circular pattern bungie seem to worship, except D2 has already wasted most its life trickling our D1 stuff back, I doubt players will stick around for it all over.

        • If they were actively adding new op weapons (pinnacle/ritual) and in general just adding new vendor and world drops (not just yr2 versions of yr1 guns) then retiring old gear wouldn’t be a big deal but they’re not and so it is. I don’t know how bungie can’t see the game as the players see the game. It’s always been arrogant and patronising from bungie and it’s sad that such a ignorant company owns such a unique ip.

        • I feel somewhat the same, its one thing for the choice of leaving it behind and going after something else being yours, another is spending only RNJesus knows how long farming for a specific roll on a specific weapon just for it to be left behind so bungie can re sell a lazy edit/re-skin of it as a new thing for you to go after, something that not only does bungie track record shows they will do it but they also stated they would do so in the director's cut

        • Logged in and thought of doing a black armory forge, well anything I get will be retired so why. Thought I would do ascendant challenge, well it is going to be retired too so it is pointless. Why did I even buy this game and all of the expansions if everything in them is to be retired? this game is the biggest waste of time of the decade.

          • Would they even make “New” weapons? Or would they do what they did before? Give us everything back? AGAIN? How many times do you think they’ll have us get MIDA-multitool? That would make 4 times. And that’s just an example. I don’t even believe they can make or will make good enough weapons anymore. They downgraded from pinnacle to ritual. And now do you expect them to make a legendary that’s as popular as Recluse? I severely doubt it.

Weapon retirement is the biggest lie they’ve ever presented to the community. It’s a failed concept they walked back from in D1 because it doesn’t make the game better but instead makes it worse. . I’d love them to explain how a bygones or blast furnace, kindled orchid or a spare ration is something they have to worry about testing with new content they develop . They want to eradicate powerful weapons we’ve earned and replace them with weaker counter parts. Don’t buy the lie. You tubers, streamers and writers love the idea seeing it gives them a whole new gravy train to make videos and articles about as each new weapon is released. It’s a failed concept and is being presented as if it’s for the betterment of the game. It’s not in any way for the player base that’s actually spent the time to earn those weapons. If they do it I will stop playing.. Put your foot down and refuse this otherwise everything and anything will be on the table for them to take away. It’s absurd it’s even being considered.

            • I kinda get what they may be trying to do, but if it is what I'm thinking, it's just more laziness. If they are just aging out weapons to make more weapons viable, I get that. The problem is, I believe, with Bungie's track record, is they will "vault" weapons, reskin them as new, and/or then "unvault" them in a year or two. It's just lazy either way IMO, which seems seems to be the Bungie was now. It's just sad, because I've loved this game, especially D1, and I haven't played in months and don't see any reason to come back. And judging by the numbers and tone on the forums and web, seems to be common right now.

Can you help me understand something? What is the point of making new weapons if people only want to use the "OLD" weapons because of the time spent to grind them for their god rolls and specific load outs? If bungie came out and said "We have taken feedback on "retiring your current weapons" and have decided we wont be limiting weapons from End game activities and we also wont be releasing anymore weapons down the line because there is no point in doing so if the majority just want to use what they already have." Would that be okay with players? Take FFXIV for example. Whenever you reach a new level there is different gear/weapons you can aquire to boost your stats and if you dont you will be easier to kill and it will be harder to kill enemies as you go into tougher content. This is a true MMO. As it is right now bungie has acknowledged that this is in some sense an MMO(Lite). We have read from the directors cut that it is very taxing on the developers to run countless simulations to make sure your chatter bone wont break the game in new content being released. This time could be allocated to other areas of the game to provide an over all better experience which is why they have decided to give us a time frame for how valuable our weapons will be for endgame. You wont be losing any old weapons. We just wont be able to use them in end game content becasue the light level of weapons will be capped after a year of being in the game. This means strikes, Crucible, Lost Sectors, adventures, Patrols, will still allow you to complete the content using whatever weapons you want. It would only be end game which consists of: New Raids, Trials, Iron Banner, Nightfalls (Harder versions) that would require higher light level to do. Again it all comes back to the loot. If there is no incentive for you to aquire new weapons because you can just use what you already have why should bungie continue making new weapons? This method we have currently destroys what a looter shooter essentially should be.

                • That’s your loss. If you want a gun game, go get Borderlands 3....tons to grind for. The Destiny franchise has so many options for peeps, if guns need to take a back seat to better content, so be it.
