The Original (fanfic)

The Exo ran along the wall of the damaged city, smoke rising in the distance from burning buildings. He hadn't known that stone could hold flame that well until these things appeared, these... objects. They were similar to the Traveler, but fundamentally different. He could feel it, wanted to reach out and study this link, this difference. Unfortunately, these pyramids were extremely hostile, and extremely tough. None of the weapons humanity had could do anything, even the ones he had built. He'd been awed by their power, wanted to study it. Unfortunately, humans still saw Exos as only warriors, discrediting his degrees, his unnatural intelligence. He'd been quickly conscripted, the only remnants of his previous station the ID tag in the pocket on his chest and the knowledge held in his mind. He'd been lucky enough to avoid any deaths, so the knowledge remained safe and sound. The wall rocked again, the pyramids tearing gaps in the defenses. The Exo watched as metal was sent flying, people on fire and screaming as they died. He walked on, focusing only on the Traveler. He had a vague sense that something was going to happen, something dramatic, but he couldn't tell how he knew it. It may have been just some jitters, but he hadn't felt those for years. No, this was something else, something linked to the shapes that dominated the skies. An explosion sounded above him, and he looked up just in time to see hundreds of tons of metal streaking down towards him. He ran as fast as he could, knowing that the equations didn't work out in his favor. Nothing would work. He kept running, throwing himself away at the last second. Somehow, he just made it. He looked back at the metal, his mind puzzling as he ran the equations again. He shouldn't have survived. He looked down, feeling a vague tugging sensation, and realized he hadn't quite made it. A hole sat right where his heart should be. He chuckled, ironically pleased that the math had worked. At least some things in this odd new world of shapes stayed the same. He dropped to his knees, the emptiness from the whole spreading through the rest of his body. He fell backwards, and his last thought was how he hadn't quite managed to make his life last long enough. ------ The Exo opened his eyes, annoyed at waking up. He should've been able to sleep longer, get some more energy. A small object hovered in front of him, oddly shaped. His eyes focused, bringing the object into sharper clarity. A small glowing sensor rested in the center of the object, acting much like his. He almost jumped out of his chassis when it spoke. "Hey you. You're finally awake. I guess... I guess this is how it works. Huh." The Exo looked at the object sharply, his instincts telling him this thing, whatever it was, was important. Most likely to him, but maybe to everything else. He stood up and asked the object the first question he had. "What are you? I've never seen anything like you." "I'm a Ghost. I... I think we were really just made. We were meant to find people, and I guess I was meant to find you. What's your name? I believe you should have one." The Exo looked around, puzzled. He knew he should have a name, but he couldn't remember it. He patted his chest, and found a small pocket. Reaching in, he pulled out what appeared to be an identification card, or what remained of one. All it had on it was the word Doc. The Exo looked at the Ghost. "I guess I'm called Doc. What about you?" The Ghost bobbed in the air, then spoke sounding puzzled. "I guess I don't have one either. What would you call me?" Doc looked around, then looked back at the Ghost. "Hmm. I wish I was poetic. Umm... what about Seeker? Because that's what you were doing." The Ghost bobbed, then bobbed again. "That sounds good. What do we do now?" Doc looked around, feeling like something was missing. He needed to know what to do. He looked down and saw a rifle on the ground. Picking it up, he checked the ammo and the sights quickly, like second nature. "Is there anyone else like me?" Seeker bobbed again. "The others are looking for some, but I think you're the first. I don't think I was supposed to find you this soon." Doc looked up from where he was gathering extra ammo. "Well, then let's get moving. I feel like blowing something up."
