So Monster Hunter seems fun so far

Kept hearing about how fun MHW was, but when I would look at the gameplay I was convinced I wouldn't like it. Well, I was finally bored enough with Destiny to take a little break. Wanting something diffrent than a shooter, I chose MHW. So far so good! I like the exploring and watching the monsters interact with each other. I suck so far at combat, but its diffrent enough to try to learn and get better. I am slowly learning, like sharpening your weapons while battling. Eat a meal before you leave, and empty your pouch often. So yea, late to the party. Got any good tips for this newb?

  • It's really good... to a certain point. I'm my experience once I had a one size fits all build that could take on most of the hints then I couldn't find a "why" to keep going. Did all the big challenges and hunts but still came away from the game not really enjoying the melee combat. It's insanely restrictive movement. It does lend the weapons weight but it didn't feel great.

    • Sounds like you're doing pretty good so far for a newbie. Biggest thing I can recommend is always perform your routine maintenance before a hunt. Make sure you have all your potions, materials, and whatever else you need for the hunt. Have you locked yourself in for a main weapon yet? If not, play around with weapons in the training area and pick whatever feels most natural. Capture monsters to get more rewards. Make sure you complete as many optional quests as you can. They can unlock some helpful tools, like the different mantles and ingredients for meals. Also, be warned if you have the iceborne dlc and are using the armor that came with it. The armor that comes with the dlc is just to help boost you through early game faster and get you to high and master rank. Be warned, the game will get harder. Have fun!

        • Always eat before the hunt. Those stat boosts can save your life. Feel free to try all the weapons and find one you like. Watch the monster as they broadcast their attacks, making finding when to roll or block eventually easy to recognize. Sharpen when the monster retreats is another thing I prefer doing even if I think I'm not going to need to as trying to sharpen mid combat is kind of risky.

          • I highly recommend watching some videos that show off the best weapon combos. Arekkz Gaming has fantastic weapon tutorials. Don't rush into fights with new monsters mindlessly. You'll get thrashed. Play defensive until you think you have their moves figured out and then smack them. Certain weapons are better for different situations. For Example: Hammers should be used for smacking heads while Insect Glaives should be used for mounting.

            • Another thing. Most people quit playing because of having to grind for a specific monster part and never getting that part. THIS IS WHY LEARNING WHICH BODY PARTS TO BREAK IS VERY IMPORTANT. Some monster parts will only come from a specific body part break so figure out which body part drops the thing you need and then focus on JUST that part of the monster until you break it. Disclaimer: This does not guarantee that you will get the piece you need, but it will greatly increase your odds of getting it. And investigations, do investigations if you need to grind a monster.

              • Do not underestimate the power of the Sword and Shield. In harder fights do not skip the drugs. The Lance is the best weapon in the game :-p

                • Advice for a new Hunter, eh? Well, remember that you have a dodge button for a reason. Seen plenty of people get taken out when they could’ve dodged. Don’t try to hunt anything you ain’t seen before as soon as you encounter it when in early game.....unless you got a deathwish. There is no “best weapon”, it’s all down to your play-style, so test ‘em all out. Don’t ignore the smithy, better your gear, less you’ll get carted. Keep your Palico in good gear too. Having that little guy/gal help you in battle can really turn the table sometimes, but they can’t do that if they have no health. Don’t panic during a fight, you’ll get sloppy. If you have to panic, then run instead of attacking. Make some distance to gather yourself. Always watch your back, just ‘cause you ran away from the monster, doesn’t mean they ain’t still there. ____________________________________ Hmm.....that should do for now. Questions?

                  • Highly suggest trying to solo every monster in the campaign. Makes it feel that much more satisfying, and you’ll be able to learn their attack patterns better.

                  • One of the most important things I wished I started doing earlier in the game was EAT MEALS BEFORE HUNTS!!!! Also, hammer is pretty nasty when it comes to DPS.

                  • I have maybe 5 or so hours played. I liked using the insect glaive. I feel like Darth Maul fighting giant monsters. I kinda want to get back into it.

                        • What platform do you play on? What is your main weapon of choiche? Always read the hunter notes on a new monster you encounter and use their weaknesses against them. Try to lure monsters in turf wars for free damage. Don't be afraid to use the SOS flare to get help if you are struggling. If you need help I can help you with your hunts. I am Mr 130 something a played the game a lot and I like to help people get better at the game and have fun while doing it.

The Switch Axe has got to be my favorite weapon concept (mostly because I’m a sucker for Transformers, but the one I enjoyed playing around with the most, are dual blades.
