You sure that you aren't being shot at? You can still die to gunfire even while doing a finisher.
Also that's hilarious.

Nah thats a bug. Try killing and exploding thrall with a finisher. If he explodes during your animation you will die after finishing the animation (not because of the explosion since you are midlife after this kind of explosion...you die after the explosion)
