I think a large part of the problem is that large portions of the community want different things as their main source for new loot. The game tries to be too many different things and so if Bungie focuses on one area then other miss out, then it switches. Bungie also aren’t afraid to try things either. Season of the Drifter is a testament to that. That was......different. As long as the game has an identity crisis(for which it ABSOLUTELY does), this will always be the case. Bungie checkmates themselves by not acknowledging the vastly different types of activities this game has and thus the very different types of gamers it has attracted. Their design philosophy is very rigid. Some group always has to miss out or begrudgingly grind something they aren’t that into in the first place. This has been the case since D1. Jack of all trades, master of none only gets one so far. The game has always a bit inconsistent and imbalanced.

  • Please correct me if I'm wrong. TL:DR of your reply, Bungie let the community chase them into a corner where they try a share a pocket pie with 50 different people, each of them getting 1/50th of a small pie

Bungie are solely responsible for the design, development, and release of the game. There has been a lot of documentation about the internal struggles of Bungie over the years, and the community has nothing to do with it.

  • Not so many slices, but in a way, yes. If they gave people more options for paths of progression/acquisition and actually let people play how they want to play, the community would be WAY less divisive and people could cling to what they like best for replay value and grinding to get exactly what they want out of loot. As it is now, many people just straight up pass on certain portions of the game because it’s not to their liking. Which, for most games if it’s not to someone’s liking they just don’t play it. The problem with Destiny is that it’s essentially multiple very different genres rolled into one, but everything is meticulously specific and spread out across the entire experience. So it’s play everything, even things you really don’t like, or miss out. It’s just not a very good design model. Bungie is severely hindering their best source of information for what players like and don’t like the most by doing this. The game, and us. They can’t have accurate participation numbers for what people like if they require everyone play everything to get everything.

  • Very true. But the wide community won't accept missing out on anything despite if they don't like the main purpose. Example: How many people were mad about last word's quest being a pvp-oriented one
