The Magic that was SRL

I fondly remember that feeling when the game gave me the sparrow. The visuals the handling and the noise. The noise the engine made when speeding up was so awesome.
While it’s pretty useless in most situations the emotes that can be used on the sparrow just show how much care they put in the vehicle.
However other than that the sparrow wasn’t seen as much more than a way to get around the map... until SRL.
SRL was probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing destiny. The mode worked so well with the sparrows. New perks like doing tricks to make the sparrow faster and the ability to cut corners was amazing. You also had the boost pads that would increase your speed. And the maps OH THE MAPS!
The maps where new and unique. On mars you were racing along the cliffs, driving through the city, and let’s not forget those Cabal turbines.
Venus had you driving through a vex structure hoping through portals and dodging lasers. At the end you used a fallen skiff as a ramp while a Spider Walker took pot shots at you.
The horns! Oh how could you forget about the horns. There was always that brief down time before the race where players would spam the horn button.
My personal favorite was the gjallarhorn horn. After honking the horn I would always listen closely to hear wolves howling in the distance.
The SRL book rewarded you for placing first and just playing the game mode.
Completing matches gave new sparrows and armor. The armor was new and unique. Not reskined and old. I loved the cloak that left a trail behind you while using a sparrow.
Bungie went even further by adding the mode to custom games. So I could race with friends even when the event wasn’t active.
Best of all! Eververse wasn’t involved. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Agreed, bring it back. Best looking guardians wear SRL gear. True story :- I was sexually propositioned by multiple guardians wearing SRL gear in the tower when playing on my Warlock and Hunter. Made me feel like a women, but not in a positive way. Also made me realise what a bunch of dicks my fellow men can be. I even was asked to send real photos of myself to these guys. I can only imagine the horror when pictures of my 42 year old, overweight male self, wearing just a Moments of Triumph T-shirt from year one posing coquettishly arrived on their PlayStation. 🤣😂 Lol that’ll learn them.

Thought for sure SRL was going to make a come back when they released the tangled shore. Hell that area is basically one big race track. It was also a great distraction from the normal grinding that destiny is. You got my vote, signed gamer for life.

It was a entertaining event. Shaders where boss level in D1. The black with glowing blue Mmm still my favorite to this day. If it came back, cool. if it didn't, also cool. I liked it but it did get old after while.

Sparrow racing was literally one of my favorite events from all of D1. I wish they would bring it back so bad. It’s sad to hear them say that they won’t bring it back just because it wasn’t worth it. Because the people who loved it, LOVED IT. Oh well, I guess.

It wasn't the greatest thing by far but provided something broke the cycle. SRL should return with some tweaks, and add triumphs such as 1, Gated: Hit all gates 2. Ungated: miss all 3. Its tricky: perform a trick in mid air 4. Podium: finish top 3 5. The one: 1st place 6. Blazer: fastest lap in a race

I don't want SRL back I want something equally creative in D2. Not a ton of mundane auto generated grind quests doing the same thing we've been doing for years over and over.

Though SRL has its cool aspects.... overall it loses steam. Once you race the courses for a while they get a bit old, gear (been there got that), etc... So to keep it fresh, Bungie has to involve too many resources to add new tracks, new gear... new fun to the game mode. At that point they are more worried about an aspect that is a “side object” instead of focusing on what Destiny truly is. That’s the main problem. I want them focusing on good Destiny content and actual issues that are the core of what Destiny is. In other words... SRL: though a cool activity, would cheapen Destiny in reality, rather than strengthen it.

The best event bungie has put into the game yet . Why you might ask —- It was different . I took destiny into a complete different realm. It was awesome . And destiny 1 was better for it

I loved SRL, it was all I played when it would come around. The armor looked super cool, and it played like a slower version of wipeout. I get that it wasn’t for everyone, but neither is gambit or crucible, and I don’t feel like those are wastes of developer time just because I don’t like them. We each have fun in our own way and experience everything differently. I’m not going to poop on your fun just because it isn’t fun for me or I can’t see the value in it.

Seems like the community is divided on SRL. Some like it, others dont. Me personally I enjoyed it. It was something different and fun that they experimented with for a short time. I dont much care for PvP just cause I'm not very good. I know I'm not good and know I wont ever be, and I'm fine with that. SRL was a nice change from the PvE game though that added the competition into the game in a mode that I could compete at because it wasn't based on skilled gunplay. Same reason I enjoy Gambit. Its not strictly PvP but still has that competition in it. While I would be happy to see SRL come back in some fashion, especially with the locations we have in D2, I dont want it to come back and everything cool be locked behind the Eververse, which is what would happen. It would be nice to see Amanda get some attention in the hangar since there's nothing going on down there. Lore wise theres some things that could make sense for locations. Calus has a racetrack on his Leviathan. Osiris has us racing through the Infinite Forest from past, to present, to future. Heck, with the Black Garden being the new raid location, maybe throw a map in there somewhere. There are options. Destiny is a diverse game and can be whatever the developers choose it to be. It's not designed for "hardcore" or "casual" players. Its designed for an experience. The way you collect in-game items determines you're style of play. Just because someone doesn't play as much as you or dont play the content you do doesn't mean they should be shut down on their thoughts and ideas. I think SRL can find a nice niche back into the game at some point and would break up the repetition in the seasons.

Here's my issue with srl: there are a lot of important content in destiny that needs improvement. I prefer bungie to spend all their resources into improving them. If the game was at its best, I would agree with you. But I get what you mean.
