Bungie really needs to make top tier PvP rewards cosmetic (or mostly cosmetic) only.
The system will always be broken/abused/exploited as long as meaningful/unique/powerful items are locked behind a wall that can be circumvented with "cheating" or actual CHEATING.
Everybody should be able to get trials armor/weapons by grinding. Flawless gets ornaments/shaders/emblems, maybe a lowkey extra perk like Last Resort on weapons.
Everybody should be able to get pinnacle weapons by grinding. Fabled/Legend gets ornaments/shaders/emblems. Maybe, again, a slightly better version with +5 reload or handling or whatever.
WHAT!!!??? THAT'S NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT WORTH GRINDING TO LEGEND/GOING FLAWLESS!!!???
Congratulations. You just found that you don't actually want to play competitive Crucible for the sake of actual competition. You just want stuff only because other people don't have it so you can be "special" and/or pubstomp with broken weapons.

Congrats on still missing the point. Adding "must-have" weapons that people "can't-have" puts Crucible in the state that it's in now. Everyone hates it and it's kind of a joke. It will always be broken as long as people are "forced" to "cheat." Enjoy.

To play devil's advocate, the same could be said about raids and rewards. I honestly would have almost never raided if it was just for the action and challenge. But that said, comp has no place on a game that fails at keeping people from cheating as pitifully as Bungie does. That and giving the best players a reward that just makes them even more powerful never really made much sense when considering the spirit of competition. It would be like giving the World Series champs loaded bats for the next season. They deserve a good pinnacle weapon, just not one that ends up being a front runner in PvP. But comp PvP kind of caters to people who play Destiny mostly for PvP, so making their weapon great in PvE isn't really enticing. The only real balancing answer I can think of is to make a much longer, drawn out PvE equivalent. A skill vs. time tradeoff and the PvP version would obviously be the trophy model. Even have a trophy only game mode with a small but unique loot pool to sweeten it a bit. But as a very biased to PvE player, I would care less about what PvP players had if Bungie didn't force PvP content on me to get things I want to use in PvE. I could "git gud", but you could also just "git over there." Do your thing, have fun. Don't be a dick because I don't want it to be mine. Other than original Thorn and Invective, I think I manged to avoid PvP for close to a year and didn't care. It was only the ethereal light guaranteed from IB that even got me started. And I was OK suffering through the milestones in QP, that was a choice I was free to make. It was just the arbitrary go to PvP quest pieces that didn't really need to exist other than what felt like a push to beef up player counts in PvP that I'm really talking about.

I think though that raids are much more achievable for the average person. They really aren't [i]that[/i] hard and you know exactly what you have to do to finish. Most D2 raids even have 1-2 spots that can be filled by "add-clearers" as well. Even a "decent" PvP player is probably going to struggle to get Legend. Only a small percentage are capable of doing it legit the way the system is set up, especially facing paid carries/recoveries. I do care when people are locked out of getting meta weapons and have to fight against them and/or play without them for PvE. I have most of the pinnacle weapons FWIW.

Unfortunately the devs don't have to play the game in the same way their customers do. I don't need the MT or Recluse at the end of my journey I need it in the first half of that journey especially if I have to go up against everyone with those very same weapons.

Well nobody will go trough that shit just because of some cosmetics and people dont play comp because its fun or to 'compete', people play that trash because of powerful rewards that come with it. If you are not able to get something like reclusive ( which is actually pretty easy to get) then it doesnt matter which guns are used aginst you, you will lose 90% of your gunfights regardless...
