The Futurama Representation of God

Now, to start off you can saw whatever you will about the show. I am not here to talk about the show itself. The only thing I care to cover is the interesting way that I think they covered God in the show. Shown above is a clip from the ending of the show that highlights the basis of the theory. In this clip here you see the rest of the theory. I think overall it is very interesting. There are so many who say simply that there is no outside force in life. Something had to start that Big Bang. You cannot argue that. Aside from that the thing that people call "luck" throughout history in events could be called divine influence. While I am in now way a religious person I find this interesting. I consider myself Agnostic, and this is about where my belief lies. There could be a god out there, I don't know, I can't know. If there is one he must be all knowing, but we will never know what he does or when. They stated it more eloquently than I did in that clip, so hopefully that gave you the gist. What do you think about this interpretation? I think it is more believable than anything we were told before. Just something more to now think about.

  • If god were omnipotent, could he created a stone he couldn't lift? I'll just leave that there.

        • Most of your post is fair game...
Posted by: Black Eagle X99 Something had to start that Big Bang.
But I take issue with this. From a scientific perspective, you cannot say where did the big bang come from without saying where did god come from. I find it very infuriating when people use that argument against the big bang.

          • I'm afraid that the explanation makes far too many assumptions that don't sit right with me. For example; god's neurology is that of ours in that it can only handle so many commands. Who's to say that a higher being would be anything like us at all? Though I personally cannot understand the claim, it is often said that the Big Bang does explain how something could have arisen from nothing. That said, though I consider myself agnostic, I am leaning towards the atheist side. There is probably not a god, I think, and if there is then he's either a huge jerk, a being that doesn't understand our concepts of good and bad, or something altogether beyond our understanding.

            • Sorry if this is not adding to the actual discussion but that episode was fantastic! It showed me all the moral dilemmas that can arise from being in charge, how helping too much can leave people helpless.

              • The world, the universe, it's already extremely odd. Let's not make it any weirder by saying some God created it all. I don't believe in any religion made by man, because they all serve to blind - compassion from other human beings is so unthinkable, so surely the aid you receive comes from a God! It's all God does - he takes credit for our good deeds, and so becomes an embodiment of all that is good. It's a lie. Satan and Jesus aren't external deities, they're characteristics of man. As to where we came from, and our home, well, every theory is equally odd and bizarre. Pick one you like.

                  • It's common knowledge that quantum fluctuations started or "caused" the big bang.

We may live in a simulation. It may be an ancestor simulation. It may be the simulation of an entire universe, run by an alien being beyond our comprehension, yet mortal. Or beyond mortality. Perhaps it is incapable of looking at the details of its simulation. Maybe it watches the universe begin, swell, and meet its heat death in ten minutes, unaware of anything smaller than a galaxy, or maybe it watches the goings about of every sapient being in its simulation. Or every living being in its simulation. Maybe it cares about them, maybe it doesn't. It could feel bad when bad things happen to people, or it might see us as digusting creatures and our suffering as well-deserved. Perhaps it intervenes, but it might not. It can care, and still refuse to ruin its simulation by changing the effects of the choices taken within it. Maybe there's even an afterlife, if it cares enough about the creatures in its simulation to reward them for participating. If you're running a whole universe, or more than one, it can't be so hard to program in an afterlife. This doesn't really affect how I live. I don't consciously think about this most of the time, and when I do it just confuses me. I live as a moral person because not being a dick feels like the right thing to do, as a result of my upbringing and genetics. Probably.

                          • I believe in God. He has aided me multiple times throughout life. I used to not believe him, and even call people stupid who did. But I understand now why people choose to believe in him. My person belief is that he is not truly benevolent. I don't believe in the Christian God, or at the very least, think that the Church has the wrong idea about him. My personal belief is that he aids those who believe in him, however he does not punish non-believers. He simply does not aid them. He is not truly good as he will not give aid if he feels like it, but does not do it for amusement. He wants the world to live on it's own, and will only interact if he believes the person is worthy of his aid. This is what I believe. It's impossible to disprove God, similar to how it is impossible to prove he exists, so arguing is futile. I don't really agree with the video, as I know God has personally aided me multiple times.

                                • This episode was on Comedy Central earlier today. I've seen it a dozen times. Personally, the best part is when Bender has that civilization living (and dying) on him, or is it for him? "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."
