Emblems from past events are always quite iffy. From objective perspective this emblem shouldn’t be character based, but account based. But from a technical perspective, you probably should have at least one current character that played Crucible during that time. (Easiest way Buggie can implement a check to award or not award that emblem to players.)
So, you might be SOL. But that is just my guess, too.
PS personally I’m slightly bummed that I have only 3 legacy emblems from my actions in D1 (day 1 player). I missed most because I only played Age of Triumph after the cutoff date for consideration, so things like past grimoire scores etc. didn’t count for anything.

Yeah, with legacy things it is a bummer. I played the alpha all the way to the end of D1 on PS4 but then switched to PC when that was announced. Nothing transferred over at all so it was like I hadn't played D1 at all. xc I got a sweet "That Wizard Came From The Moon" t-shirt, though, so that's cool. I am worried you are right about the technicality of a character playing at a certain time. I do still hope it's untrue, though, as certain other things are more account-based. Still waiting on a response from Bungie if that's going to happen at all.
