I think zone control would be better than regular control for comp but control can debatably be considered the most competitive game mode. It requires you to control the map and maintain control of it. Yes, there are maps that favor one initial spawn over the other, but it isn't anything that can't be overcome by coordination. Can it snowball like you said? Yes. But that is because you are rewarded for controlling the map & dominating the opposing team. Also been playing since D1 Beta and played thousands of hours in crucible. I will concede and agree that LoW is, indeed, busted lol. -nhopkins13
