Zavala has PTSD

During the Red War Zavala turns from a stoic commander to a defeated husk of a man. Once we save the day his disposition changes, but I got a feeling that the loss of the city still haunts him. During War-mind Zavala puts a noticeable emphasis on the fact that Ana wasn’t at the city to help defend it. During the events of Forsaken Zavala doesn’t want us to go, on official record of course, because we need to defend the city. Also after retrieving the body of Cayde, Zavala says “I refuse to burry any more friends”, meaning he still feels guilty for the Red War. Zavala is not a heartless monster. Zavala is suffering from PTSD, and now guardians are turning away from the Vanguard towards the Drifter. Thoughts?

He shouldn't feel guilty...If only he knew the truth.
Its not his fault that the Nine disguised Ghauls arrival from us so they could see if Ghaul was capable of stealing the Light....so they could steal our Light too...
• Cayde death is why I will join the drifter. The vanguard did nothing!!! What a insult to his name. Not even ikora would sneak out, she did it for osiris but not for cayde!! She is not worthy of being vanguard and Zavala is a coward. When you're best friend is killed, you hunt the son of bitch that killed them and end them. I hope to see the vanguard crumble away and from the ashes a new cult. One that follows the path of sorrows road. Let the darkness devour our enemies. And the light cook their flesh. For reality is the finest flesh O gurdian Mine, can you taste it?

  • Cayde's death sent him further down that rabbit hole. Ikora called his ass out and he's still moping about. Get mad Zavala. Something. Maybe do a fist havoc off a ten story building into a group of scorn.

  • Considering the situations with Zavala? He doesn't have PTSD. Guilt for a lack of defenses? Yes. Not PTSD. Loss of our Light/Guardian status? That'll weigh on him for a long time. Still. No PTSD. I don't think you all understand that PTSD is a clinical term. It doesn't mean what you believe it to be. And they would not reflect that in a video game secondly.

      • That's not how PTSD works.... He feels guilt, because he's the only Titan vanguard commander in history to loose the tower. Titan's are raised with the belief that they must always be an unbreakable wall, forcing themselves to go to unhealthy lengths just to maintain this belief, literally any other Titan would feel the exact same as Zavala if they where in his shoes

        • No, Zavala does not have PTSD. Like every commander who has had somebody parish under their orders, he is guilt ridden. He’s questioning his judgement, his ethics, and ultimately himself. He’s probably replaying all of the events in his head and trying to figure out what what he should have done differently. The city was attacked on his watch, so naturally he feels like he responsible.

        • <That's why I'm willing to defend Zavala. I'm sure he'll come to and be the kickass commander he was built up to be. Also... he IS kind of right about Rasputin.>

His opinion about RASPUTIN changed after the red war also Before the red war he let it be known he was very much in favor of trying to make contact with the warmind , seeing it has a very strong ally against the forces mounting against the city. Then, post-red war , when Ana is seeking out the very thing he was in D1, he flips out and says Ana is on a dangerous goose chase and should be back at the tower. Compare the dialogue from the S.A.B.E.R strike to the dialogue from the Warmind cutscenes and it appears Zevala has multiple personality disorder. But he doesn't Losing his light, watching his people butchered, watching his city fall and feeling helpless to stop it. His ambition died, and he started feeling fear for the first time in ages. And he only cares about the safe path now. Still though, Ikora never lost her resolve, and Zevala is a hero of humanity, I will always help them , even if we have our disagreements. And I will never be an ally of that I seek to destroy , F the Dredgens and F the Drifter

            • I agree. It's his stoic behavior that is pushing some guardians away from the Vanguard. He's too rigid, but then, it's not like he can get help in his time period.

                • I respect zabala for what the character stands for but I always end up joining the dark side one way or another. I believe the traveler is shady, I still have no idea what the traveler is. Its a huge orb that grants powers but thats it? What the heck is actually inside the orb? What exactly does the orb truly want? There is history of it running away and leaving other “chosen” aliens to fend for themselves. The traveler is really shady and I honestly don’t trust it, many other dialogue in the game also makes me wonder if guardians are actually the good guys. Something about the drifter and even osiris makes me feel more at home, like these guys want answers but everyone else makes them out to be evil or whatever.

                • If he cared that much he could've officially sent us anyways. And us alone. He knows that we've killed gods before, and that should've been enough to know that we could handle it.

                • Zavala is a cool dude but he needs to retire from the Vangaurd if he's got issues. I feel that Ikora doesn't want the job any more, she's lost her passion for it because of Caydes death and the Towers politics eating at her. However no one is qualified to take over her job so she's stuck in it.

He needs to be removed from his post and possibly the city. I don't think he can be fully trusted. After the whole deal with rasputin's bunker and him walking through the back door (without helping or even calling in a stand down order), and how he turned his back when a vanguard leader was killed, it's time. He needs to go. I have said it before.. the way zavala has been acting, I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be an enemy character in future content. Hopefully, I'm wrong and he snaps out of it, but right now it looks like Ikora will have to hold everything together on her own.

                    • Look at history never once did the former Vanguard commanders lose the city, Traveler, light, countless guardians(moon campaign and twilight gap probably came close). It all happened on his watch he was defenseless and helpless, then look at titan he called guardians to regroup there then the hive attacked. Now Cayde-6 a friend and fireteam member was murdered, the Vanguard is split and he’s reeling from it with no time to cope with it no one to talk to. He knows that he can’t show it that he needs to still appear as the Stoic Vanguard commander, but unfortunately he can’t hold it and is showing it.
