Matchmaking in Endgame Activities...

So it has been over two days since Joker’s Wild released and I’ve seen all sorts of feedback on the forums, Reddit, Twitter, etc. one thing I’ve noticed a lot of people complaining about is the matchmaking in The Reckoning. Just wanted to give my thoughts about it and would love y’alls opinions as well. One thing to take note is the fact that Bungie said this is an endgame activity. Endgame is things like the raids, Nightfalls (with scores), and Trials. All of these activities do Not have matchmaking (And I wouldn’t count guides games as matchmaking necessarily). Reason being is because these activities generally require more communication to be successful. Anyways, even with The Reckoning being an endgame event, they finally did as the community requested and added matchmaking. For the most part I see people are happy with it while there are plenty of grievances about it. Between loading into instances where the event is already going, people being AFK, and people just not participating, it has been an up and down experience. However, there is not much else that I can think of that Bungie can do to solve this. (Of course, if anyone has ideas I’d love to hear them in the comments). Not everyone you match with is going to play as well as we’d like them to. For example, I could be a phenomenal PvE player, but I get matched with fellas who are more or less not as competent and have no backup in this endgame activity. Or it could be vice versa. I could be a less that satisfactory player and be a nuisance on the other people I’m matched with. Plus without communication, things happen in the real world and someone has to leave for a moment and I could be left holding the bag. But with an actual team, if I had to step away for a moment, I could give them a heads up and they could be prepared for it and not be a deer in headlights. All this to say that endgame activities are supposed to be challenging and having a team helps out tremendously. But seeing as not everyone is an extrovert or has friends to play with, some sort of matchmaking is good to have. However, we just need to remember that this does not mean that we will be put into a successful group that will be as good as we’d like. Ultimately, I like that there is matchmaking and appreciate this implantation in an endgame activity as we have been asking for for years. But that doesn’t mean I’m always going to be happy with the outcome of spending 5-10 minutes in an instance with people coming and going and losing the mode. By with the protection system in place, at least we’re not losing anything other than time when we’re not successful. Very nice feature. I guess my only real complaint is the fact that there is Lore in this area that is only available when you are in this activity. Since you can’t just go in the derelict solo, people who have no intention of playing The Reckoning that are just looking for the Lore tabs take up that valuable team space. Don’t get me wrong, more Lore to find in game is fantastic and I love the hunt and story! However, it could have been placed in a better setting to make it less stressful on players. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas about how to improve on the system, I’d love to hear it as I said before. Hope everyone is having as much fun with the new modes as I am and looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Edit: Forgot to mention that joining in on games that are already going can be annoying at times too. More often than not when joining an ongoing instance, the folks you’re with are at a low percentage and you obviously can’t put in any motes. The best thing to do it wait until the end and start over hopefully with a full lobby. But again, this goes back to the matchmaking debacle of joining with randoms instead of loading in with a full team. It’s difficult to combat because there are cases when someone gets disconnected and/or people have to leave suddenly when you’re halfway through an event or at the boss phase or something. I’d rather have a chance at getting teammates to help me over just being SoL. But that’s not always how it happens.

  • I’m scared that not enough people will read this. Even more scared that they will downvote it out of some sort of spite or troll. Regardless I am more than impressed with the way you conveyed your opinion. You conveyed the pros and cons without any vulgarity in a calm, logical, and neutral way. In doing so you have at least enlightened me and somewhat changed my way of thinking and perspective when it comes to matchmaking endgame content in general. Thank you.
