First we’d need to define what a soul is and demonstrate that it exists for me to answer that. But the possible creation of sentient A.I. does raise important questions of how we think about ethics.

Animals and aliens exist in the same universe so do they share consciousness and possibly eternal energy. My definition of a soul? A hard one - Maybe the energy, immaterial or spiritual part of a human (or entity/alien/animal) that could be constituted as immortal(?)

  • We do share the same universe, and are composed of the same substances. I think it was Neil Tyson who I first heard it from: “we are the universe becoming aware of its own existence,” or something along those lines. It’s a poetic thought. That said, I don’t know if there’s good reason to believe in the sort of thing you’re describing. In fact, anytime I hear the word “spiritual,” it sounds like a filler word for something undefined. It’s a common belief that there’s something immaterial or immortal about ourselves, but again I don’t think that comports with what we know about reality.

  • Let’s simplify. We know energy is technically eternal, bodies die but energy? It’s continuous. Anything of this universe may therefore have what I would describe as a potential for a “soul?”

What confuses me is that there’s nothing individual about the force of energy; it’s a force explained through physical laws. So the energy that the sun provides, for example, is no different than the energy that dissipates from my body - alive or dead. No different from the energy the earth’s core provides. So where does the idea of a soul come into play - especially if you’re interchanging it with “energy”?

Although we radiate heat and some light it’s different when trying to look at something with conscious thoughts. It’s hard to explain but everything is essentially made of stars anyway. Without the sun we wouldn’t be what we are today, so already a miracle or serious coincidence if not believing in “miracles” for lack of a better word. Every ounce of iron or element in our body is or can be traced to stars or exploding stars anyway. Are we not part of the same?

  • We are part of the same, the same exact particles from stars. I don’t know if I disagree with anything from your latest reply. But what I don’t really get is where the “immaterial” aspect comes into play. To me, the immaterial part seems like an unsubstantiated answer to tentatively explain why we have consciousness. I don’t know why we tend to rule out natural particles/forces/etc emerging to create what we are - what our brain produces. That seems more probable to me than assuming something supernatural. We’re going off on a bit of a tangent, probably my fault. I’m still interested in your replies, but don’t feel like you have to since we’re getting a bit off topic to your OP

Aliens and animals are as well. That essentially makes us universally connected. To simplify. Also what makes our brains so far above the other species on the planet? Evolution is an amazing theory but lacking. Quote - “what our brain produces. That seems more probable to me than assuming something supernatural.” But why is our brain on a higher function than pretty much anything on the planet? Why are we the ones having this conversation and not a cow? Or even the MOST intelligent monkey? They are smart. They are evolving. What set us apart? What makes our brains question, design or find or try to define “probable?”
