Lost in Thought Prologue: Light

Table of Contents Thick vegetation covered the ground and rose overhead, spreading indefinitely outwards to form a massive jungle. The steep edge of a cliff abruptly cut off the greenery nearby, curving off into the distance and dropping down to a churning sea. Dense layers of clouds hung in the sky, a permanent feature on this planet, forming an impenetrable mask over the sky. The radiance of Sol was nowhere to be seen, leaving everything in a deep darkness that was only interrupted by the occasional flash of lightning high above. One solitary beam of light pierced the night, slowly passing between trees as it swept its focus back and forth across the ground. Rocks and fan-like leaves were briefly illuminated before vanishing back into the shadows as the beacon moved on, making its way towards the cliff edge. The spotlight continued tirelessly, roving between the dark silhouettes of the trees. Its gaze never lingered, showing no interest in the endless growth of plant life that only served to obstruct its search. Metal glinted faintly at the edge of the beam. The spotlight froze. A hand wrapped in dull steel, laying motionless on the ground at the faint edge where shadow consumed light. The beacon shifted and slowly traced the limb, revealing an arm, a chest, a body. The form of a man, concealed by a veil of dirt and foliage. Plants stretched up to embrace the corpse, covering it in the slow way the planet eventually made all things one with itself. A layer of armor, battered and worn down by time, shielded the body from the elements. The beam moved up to the head, revealing more metal. Steel plates and mechanical parts interconnected to create a face as durable, inexpressive and gray as the armor that enveloped the rest of the body. Hollow, lifeless eyes stared up into the sky above, seeing nothing. A solitary streak of faded gold painted the surface underneath the left eye. It was the only color that broke the bleak monochromatism of the mechanical man’s body. The light hovered over the face for a moment, taking it in. The light went out, and everything was engulfed in darkness.
