It is something that is a major issue but there are steps you can take to help on your end also. Just as an example my router has DDOS protection which is supposed to at least help prevent it from happening. I actually talked to the manufacturer before getting my new router not long ago to make sure it would help and they told me that it is still possible but majorly reduces my chances of it happening. Yes it is an expensive router but it has protection and QOS which put my game as the priority.
