When Bungie had Halo, there were short films, graphic novels, actual novels and short stories. Each one of them was completely awesome and added to the lore and/or filled in bits of story a fan craved. I read/watched each before ultimately leaving the franchise behind. Destiny has a very, very deep lore...and yet not a single novel, comic (PRINTED comic of quality), animated short or what have you. The live-action commercials, maybe... But I don't get why they squander such an awesome property with these little mini web comics. The itty bit that showed Ana during the 'Gap was completely badass...for one panel 😑 I feel like they could easily repeat their(financial 😆) success if they would put out EU content. A book detailing Ikora's crucible glory and her decision to leave it? I'd buy the hell out of it. Cayde's tragic story and result in becoming an exo? Shut up and take my money! A detailed comic about Zavala heroically battling mountains of ridiculous field reports? I'm sold! But not a single noteworthy bit. The comics they've put out online have been meh at best and downright disappointing at worst. Tl/dr; where is the Destiny EU?

  • I’m literally freaking out watching the cinematic story in warframe from The Second Dream quest through The War Within. I played warframe before I became a destiny no lifer back in year 1- decided to try it last week since destiny 2 wasn’t cutting it. I couldn’t help but realize just how bad destiny had gotten. A 3 minutes cinematic in warframe has more emotion and brings more connection to the character than I would ever expect out of a free to play game and frankly, it puts d2 to shame.

  • Since the beginning that's what people have been saying... "I love the lore, lore lore lore lore". After this much time I'm just sitting here wondering what lore. Destiny "lore" consists of a statement or a paragraph with no real beginning or end on a subject you'd love you learn more about but none can be found. There's countless things that we have played through but have no real reason why or to what end or even what the hell is ever going on. This is even after the fact that all the grimiore was removed and all of destiny 1 was disregarded as "folk lore". There only hashed out lore that was worth while was the books of sorrow because it told a beginning, explained the content, and allowed a definite end. Destiny lore is akin to some vague flavor text on a weapon or armor that you'll hear referenced later in a vague statement. There's a lot that could be there...a lot of great stories that COULD be there...but simply aren't.

  • If you read the Grimoire, Books of Sorrow, etc, you'll find the lore that makes Destiny great. The problem is the Bungie has no clue how to implement it ever since the original writers left. That's why D2's lore fails to live up to D1's hype and even D1's was pretty crappy too at least until TTK.

  • I do agree that there's so much that could be there....but is simply being left to languish in the realm of fanfiction and comic books. Every part of that disengages me from the story if I have to go pull out my phone to look up Byf's YouTube channel for a video on what the hell is going on.

  • Agreed. It's been a consistent issue since D1 vanilla and I doubt it's going to be fixed properly until at least D3 (if the series survives that long).

If it does I won't see if. I'm not buying into the game yet again saying "maybe they'll get it this time" for the 4457743357th time. Only reason I have the current expansion pass is because someone gifted it to me. Trust me when I say I would love to get neck deep into a compelling and rich sci-fi universe or a compelling story in general. Sadly it just isn't here

  • Yea. Destiny's basically one of those games that shouldn't have been launched in the first place tbh. Most of their writers left very early into the game's life, Activision pulled some crap and butchered the game down immensely before launch, and the game has constantly struggled with its identity as a FPS RPG. I don't know if there even is a proper analogy to compare the game to either.

  • Believe me I'm very familiar with the tragedy that is Derpstiny. It laughed unopposed to a widely open genre. It's a smooth playing looter shooter where you do simply that. You shoot and loot, nothing more to it no matter much we urn for it

Yes and no. For example, the ODST program in Halo was very lightly touched upon in game. It wasn't central or necessary, but it was cool. The novels came out, a graphic novel too. They filled in what was happening aside from the Chief, which also happened to affect his own mission in the games. In Destiny, let's use Cayde for example. Yes, we've had lore touch on his tragic backstory...but it was never necessary for our Guardian to know or experience. That and, you know, happened ages ago. If Bungie put out a novel that went into Cayde's failure and decision to become an exo, it'd fill in story for the character. Story that is not integral to the game, but damned fun all the same. I feel like, if handled properly, lore not in-game can be just as satisfying in a novel as the bits we're spoon fed in the strikes, campaign, etc.
