So basically you want all games to be like trial versions and any extra content to be paid for? That's what will happen if you try to force companies to provide you with free games. I don't remember buying any lootboxes and rarely do microtransactions. But I could care less if others want to or not. I do have a real problem with a company being forced to give away their products for free.

  • When you have a free to play model in a $60 game, make your game free to play.

So you are for lootboxes and microtransactions and would be fine with playing only the trial part of a game?

  • No. Make the whole game free if publishers are going to shove MTX down our throats. I'm am also NOT ok with any form of loot boxes. They are not there for the player to have fun, they are there SOLEY to take our money. I'm fine with cosmetic only MTX if they are direct purchases. That's fine. I see something I want, I buy it. Loot boxes are there to make you pay more for what it's actually worth. I'm basically saying EA is having a F2P MTX model on full priced $60 games, make the full game free if they are going to do that.

  • Consumers really decide this, supply and demand. If people didn't like these features, companies wouldn't provide them. I'm not a fan of lootboxes, but do know people that enjoy them. I won't advocate removing them if some people like them. When people start pushing for full games to be free, that could affect my enjoyment of future games. Companies aren't going to put as much into a game that is free to play.

  • I am pretty sure consumers did not ask for lootboxes, but in many games they are the only way to get stuff people want, thus forcing them to buy them. Thats is why a lot of people call them exploitative and some, since you are buying to get a chance to get a certain item, consider it a form of gambling.

  • I've never felt like I was forced to buy, sure some items were interesting but not enough to pay for a chance at them.

  • Maybe not you and me and plenty of others, but many more do some even to the extent of spending more than what they paid for the initial game. And in a few cases a lot more, thats why I call the practise exploitative, because it is.

  • It's not that people like them it's that they don't care, even if they do it makes it worse. Just because someone else lies something, doesn't make it good. They are bad for consumers and only there to make even more cash. They aren't there to cover the cost of making the game. Maybe some publishers do what people like, but not EA. They do what sells, they don't care what we think as long as we keep paying. I'm not just going to let something that is only there to milk our wallets.

  • Some people do like them or they wouldn't sell. Nothing else makes sense you don't spend money on things you don't like. Companies have to make money, keeping games at 60.00 while production costs are rising forces companies to find other ways to make their money. The people who buy the extras are footing the bill for those who don't want to pay more than 60.00 for a game. This is an old article, 3 years ago but it has some interesting insight to why games have these extras you can buy or choose not to buy. DLCs and MTX done right are fine. HOWEVER, when greed comes into play it gets way too out of hand. Loot boxes were designed to get us to pay more for stuff that isn't actually worth that much. Character skins that used to be free unlocks are now often times cost up to $10. Look at Metal Gear Survive. They make you pay for freaking character slots. I get why MMOs might do that because to save on server space, but MGS is mostly offline and the entire game was just to make a quick buck. MTX these days by EA and Activsion is not about making back the money to make more games, it more like making even more money even though they made the money back already from game sales and DLC. Horizon Zero Dawn cost $47 million dollars to make and made around $266 million($35 per game at 7.6 million sales) and that is a very rough estimate having each sale cost $35 because of sales that have went on. This was a game that has no MTX and lengthy DLC and made back 5.6x the amount of cash back. You don't need MTX and loot boxes to make a profit.

  • Just don't buy games that have them, I personally don't like console exclusive games so I tend to avoid them. I'm not going to rant about others buying them. That's their choice. There are alot of factors that come into play when we decide to buy or not to buy.

  • I was just using HZD as an example that you don't need MTX to make the money back.

  • Let's hope all games do as well as HZD, but unfortunately that is the exception rather than the rule.

  • That might be the case but look at the games that use this model. CoD, I am pretty sure they knew that that game would do welll on its own. Destiny 2 same as CoD. And BF 2? A combined arms FPS with Starwars, probably 2 of the most populair things, ofcourse that would do well enough on its own, hell BF 1 was kinda bland and disapointing and it still sold bucketloads.

  • Either the base price goes up or they find other ways to make up the difference. Some games I buy the extras if I like the game. Some games I don't like enough to spend more money on them. I think this is a fair exchange, more people get to play even if they don't have every single item available.

  • Extras are fine, as long as it is done in an uninsulting way and definity not by lootboxes. And games will not get a price increase, not for a while at least. I don't buy the "games are too expensive to make" excuse from publishers, if that were true they would have stopped making them a long time ago.

  • HZD is sadly the exception because developers and publishers are too sacred to try new ideas. That's why I think it did so well. What other game allows you to kill robot dinosaurs with a bow and arrow?
