No. There's no free lunch. You think a F2P game is free, then you realise you're getting nickel-and-dimed for every convenience that would come with a base, paid up-front game. It's this $10 special horse you have to buy if you don't want to have to leg it over the needlessly vast distances between points of interests. It's inventory space that quickly fills-up with all the pointless crap that seem to exist only to drive you to buy a $30 bag. It's all the best-looking armor and clothes they push on you, constantly reminding you how much you just look like a hobo with a shotgun. It's the artificially lengthened grinds to progress, unless you buy many short duration XP boosters. It's that prompt for a limited-time offer to buy a resurrection after you get killed at the end of a raid. Quick, splurge $5 now if you don't want to start over. It's the countless manipulations that entire teams of unethical behavioural specialists regularly come up with in order to mind-fvck the weak-willed into spending way more on these F2P games than they would have for an honest, $100 all-included game. You may be smart enough to not fall for these traps, but you'll be annoyed, inconvenienced and hampered all the same by their schemes. F2P games aren't free. And they are a consistently obnoxious game-play experience. You think Eververse is bad now? Wait till you get a load of free-to-play Destiny. No thanks.

 • I agree because Warframe comes extremely close to doing some of these things so I understand your point for sure. But with players and even lawmakers working against MTXs, I don't think they could do it to such abhorrent levels without being crucified like EA with Battlefront II.

 • Ah, but all the examples I have provided exist in actual games. Neverwinter, ESO, Destiny 2. The lawmakers are not proposing to do away with all this, they just want to restrict lootboxes to adults. The rest of it, that's not going away anytime soon. I just want to pay a fee at the door and enjoy myself, you know? MTX are intrusive to that experience, they break immersion at every turn. Furthermore, I want to be able to trust that the game designers made something a certain way so as to maximize the fun and satisfaction of it, and not to annoy me enough to skip it with money. The presence of MTX in a game makes that trust impossible. You want to know the most despairing thing about MTX? It works even if the vast majority of players loathe it, because of the whales. It's designed to make money off very few people. There is no public outcry, no boycott that can make this despicable practice go away, because even if almost all the players quit, the whales will still be hooked, and that's all they need. Neverwinter makes enough to support a team of developers, designers and artists, while still turning up the profits to justify its existence, with only a few thousands of players daily. Shit, they can even afford dedicated servers.
