I think a lot is owed to 64. Realistically, platforming in games has been greatly influenced by 64, and while there is a lot to be said for Odyssey...it just didn't meet that level of revolution/excitement that 64 did. Though, to be fair I was much younger when I played 64, so most things felt new and exciting.

  • Imo, you can’t give something the title of “best” purely on the idea that it was influencial. Kirby’s Dreamland, for example, set the tone for the entire rest of the series, but Kirby’s Adventure is objectively just better, and Kirby Super Star Ultra contains the entirety of Kirby’s Dreamland inside of it (albeit with enhanced graphics, and new mechanics). Now, if you still like Dreamland, because Kirby doesn’t need all these newfangled copy abilities, well, that’s fine, but to say Dreamland is better purely because it laid the groundwork isn’t a good argument, imo.

  • Ultimately, it comes down to how you define best. I took it as the level of satisfaction at the time of play. The enjoyment and "wow" factor of a game is greatly impacted by the historical precedents and available options of the market at the time. 64 completely revolutionized how I understood platforming to be, it took my breath away. I have only really had that sensation a few times since. So while Odyssey might objectively be a better game, it doesn't have that X factor which really floored me. There is nothing unique about it that I can't get anywhere else. But like I said, it depends on how you define best.

  • Which is okay. Imo, the “best” game is whichever you enjoy, or enioyed, the most. Like, my favorite is Sunshine, because I had the most fun with it. And the revelutionary factor can definitely help with that. When you look at a game, and it’s groundbreaking, you’ll probably look upon it fondly. But, for example, if you didn’t have any fun with 64, but aknowledged it as revolutionary, and then said it was the best because of that, that’s the type of thing I’m saying shouldn’t be a thing.

  • I'm surprised people aren't voting Galaxy. I normally see them ranked pretty much the highest.

  • Galaxy was unique and really special at a time when the wii needed games and when Mario was due for another big game
