Overall great post. Rerolls are the one thing I sort of disagree with. We had rerolls at one point in D1. All it did was use up some of your consumables until the top few archetypal weapons had the perk set you wanted and then you were done. For me after about a month of rerolling, no weapon I received was good enough to keep. I can see that at least I had something to use those consumables on for a bit, but it did not really add anything for the bulk of that "season". I think the availability of rerolling is just another artificial bandaid that does not really fix anything. Your main point of no system can be perfect is very true, all devs can do is try variants until the least problematic system is found. Bungie has tried the two extremes so a hybrid is the next step.
For me after about a month of rerolling, no weapon I received was good enough to keep.
See, I can imagine someone saying the exact same thing once they finally obtain their godroll. Once they have what they're after, they're not going to chase after that specific thing anymore. They chase after something else instead, and there's nothing inherently wrong with this system. The two main problems are: 1) Players getting stuck on grinding for one specific weapon so long it becomes a significant source of frustration for them (*cough* Necrochasm *cough*). Systems which are almost pure RNG are terrible for this, as there's nothing the player can do to increase their chances of finally getting what they're after. Bad Luck protection can be implemented in cases like that new Raid Shell, but it's far more difficult for things like perks, as there's little to no way of knowing what specific perks the player is looking for. 2) Players having nothing left to chase after completing their current objective. The point of re-rolling, in my eyes, is to offer players some form of control in situations like problem #1. By allowing them to re-roll specific columns on their weapon, this allows them to overcome hurdles of RNG separately, as opposed to all at once. They are much more likely to eventually succeed this way, provided they keep playing to obtain the required materials. Problem #2 is something that ultimately only Bungie can fix by creating new content, but for short term they could also fix it by making duplicates matter in some way. If they can find a way to make duplicates matter, even after the perfect version of that weapon has been obtained, they can keep players occupied for a long time.

 • By the way, I consider that you have "won the internet" today.

 • Truthfully I don't disagree with you at all. Everything you stated is well thought out, supported and clearly written. If your proposal was implemented word for word I would be incredibly happy. I just wanted to make a statement that re-rolling is not a end all fix that a lot of people think it is. My pie in the sky hope is for the weapon pool to be expanded 10 fold at least. Then static rolls kind of become random, but not as ridiculous as having all 3 or 4 columns of madness.

 • That'd be cool, new weapons are always nice.
