Is Three of Coins simply a placebo? (Bungie Official Tweet)
Without Bungie providing the percentage increase of chance for an exotic to drop, how do we know if ToC does anything at all?
We can’t rely on Bungie’s veracity here either. Think, first they throttled experience gain without telling us but allowed us to buy fire team medallions that would have been pointless if you were being throttled. Then they “fixed” the issue of throttling xp gain but then DOUBLED the amount of xp needed to level up without telling a soul.
Based on that track record, what’s keeping them from releasing ToC as a placebo for us to burn through the thousands of shards we have? How does one prove that random drops have increased when said drops are RANDOM?!?
[b]UPDATE:[/b] So after reading many of your comments it seems as if ToC is in fact BUGGED and REDUCES your chance of gaining exotics when activated. My recommendation is to avoid using ToC at all costs if you value getting exotic drops.
Bungie is now on Christmas break so it’s doubtful we will hear anything on this issue nor will it be resolved any time soon.

Ran one, farmed public events, did heroic strikes, for almost the whole time for the 3oC, didn't get one exotic. Not one.

My experience appears to be atypical from the community. I've ran them on all of my characters this weekend and picked up 7 exotics over around a 10 hour period. However, two of those were from Weekly milestones, so take it as you will.

It worked as intended (great as a matter of fact) when it was first introduced. Since they tried to fix it... it has actually been worse than not using them at all. Don’t expect Bungie to finally figure it out. They couldn’t in D1. And they won’t in D2 either.

I get more exotics doing regular things. I used a ToC once and 3.5 hours in I got nothing. I ended up just logging off. So yeah it's bugged.

2 RepliesThey don't seem to do anything, check you tube on subject, tests have been done where players didn't get exo's until they're Toc buff finished, same happened to me, and when I did get an exo to drop it gave me a duplicate, so it seems Toc are bugged,they seem to remove all chance of exo drops when used, save your shards don't buy them, spread the word guardians, peace be with you all

“Bugged” is a good excuse for placebo.

No exotic during that time with 3oC and medalion. How ever on guy chaind nightfalls for the day and farmed exotics all day. Using 3oC abd medalion

Yes is the simple answer. But then I mentioned this with the fireteam medalion too. I saw no noticable difference between engram drops with or without one. Everything from the damage numbers you see to the chances of getting loot are simply a placebo in this game. Eververse items seem to make chances worse not better as now it seems does Xur's loot. Even the fated engram is a lie. I thought mine had worked as I got the colony from it but then, upon completing 3 milestones and turning in an exotic engram from public events (no 3oC active) I got two more! My drop from the fated engram being something I didn't have looks like it was a simple RNG fluke!

Three of coins is as useless as tits on a bull. They are there and serve zero purpose.

Before doubling the XP needed to level up, I easily reached the three boosted levels on all three characters each week. Since then, two levels on two and three on the other.

Yes, it's a placebo. Bungie's entire model works around this idea. When they get caught, and have to 'fix' something, you can bet they'll alter something else to take your time.

Used a three of coins and immediately got an exotic from a public event. I think it’s limited to one exotic and then the boost drops down and doesn’t give as much of a boost.

I’ve noticed I get less when using 3 of nothing tokens. 8 hours, 2 tokens, 1 exotic = waste of time & shards. #pointless

1 ReplyIdk what you’re talking about, I played with 2 of my clan mates and mobbed heroic strikes and all of us loaded up on exotic and legendary engrams. We all had ToC and Medallions on too.

I played for 5 hours straight last nite all Crucible had 3oC on entire time and not one exotic drop

A bit more anecdotal evidence: 4 hours of grinding PVs on Titan: no exotics The VERY NEXT PV after my 3 of coins expired I got an exotic drop

When you play normally you just assume you'll get one now and then and aren't tracking how long it's been for the most part. You pop a coin, that all changes. All of these gaps between drop times would be within acceptable norms without a coin, meaning that a 1% chance isn't going to change much. Also, keep in mind that people are pretty much ten times as likely to post a complaint than a compliement. Everybody is going to complain when they get nothing, but very few are going to chime in when they have good luck. This is proof of nothing and there is in NO way any confirmation of a bug. None of this is "evidence" - it is simply a decent number of personal, unverified testimonies. It's hardly applicable. To me this just seems like some clickbait attempt to finally have some unique, BREAKING NEWS!!! in a D2 video since most of the rest are boring, duplicated content (I mean from everybody, not just you). ***** I'm not saying it's not bugged, it very well could be -- ***** -- I'm saying that what this is based on, along with what most people freaking out are looking at, means pretty much nothing. Unfortunately, we probably won't ever have concrete evidence unless Bungie provides number, which they won't. Until somebody is willing to play 100+ hours both with and without a coin, multiple times, we won't have a clear dataset; and even then that would be the ABSOLUTE minimum to even BEGIN to create a theory. Taking a bunch of random complaints and comments, taking into consideration the points I made above, is quite literally entirely meaningless. Edit: I feel like people are also forgetting that Exotic drop rates were nerfed in many areas, and we don't know by how much. This means it's very possible that even WITH a coin your drop rates is lower than before.
