If they were really concerned about spreading the rewards across ft members, they could have added faction tokens to the chest without removing the rewards for destroying crates. Alternatively they could have allowed tokens to be distributed to all players that damaged a crate or globally to all players involved in the instance. They already have these reward distribution mechanics in place and use them elsewhere in the game. Since they’re obviously concerned about farming they also could have taken the time to put in a cool down on receiving faction rep from destroying crates just as they have with looting chests and planetary materials.
It may not have been a complete lie. I suppose it’s possible they received feedback from some players that wished the loot caves were more rewarding when playing with a fire-team, but their adjustment is clearly nothing more than a “quick fix” to stop players from farming.
