There were probably more, but since vex erasure means that everyone that went in was forgotten, the vanguard must've sent in wave after wave sending them to their doom. Pahanin probably broke that cycle. If you stand in any major vex areas, you can see ghosts popping in and out of time, most likely from those doomed firetreams.

Just like every time you wiped during a VoG. Failed Timeline.

What if every wipe was a different reality we were erased from? And, our guardians the one we completed the raid with, never knew anything about the erasure, like it was all in one try. But, we still had countless of our characters erased...

That's probably what happened. During D1 vanilla campaign The Stranger mentions stronger ones made it just as far as you did, but failed. Before I used to presume it was other stronger guardians.... but it could be that those were you in other timelines... but you failed.
