Why Some People Don't Want to Play With a Fireteam

Hi, I’m a D1 player who logged over 3000 hours. I play Crucible all the time, it’s my favorite Destiny Activity. I’m decent, not great. (I hate Rumble BTW. Ironic, I know. I actually live for being a team player) I did all the Raids, a lot. (I didn’t get Rise of Iron) I was in a very successful Clan in D1(Knights of the Phoenix) I have a lot friends on my friendlist. So why do I, and other people, prefer to play solo 90% of the time? There are several reasons, and I will try to be as concise as possible. I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO PLAY: When I get home, if I have time, I just want to jump into whatever activity I feel like playing. I don’t want to see who is online, what activity they are doing, jump into their party, ask them if they want to do what I want to do, wait in orbit, wait for two other people to join, or respond to my messages, and THEN deal with the apology messages of, sorry already full etc etc. I HAVE EMOTIONAL ANGST ABOUT THESE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: When I ask for friends to join me who are engaged in another activity I feel like I am bothering them. Whether this is true or not, this is how it makes me feel, and I would rather not deal with it. I DON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE TALKING: Often times in these groups people are chatting away about their personal life, and it can be overwhelming to me. I DO enjoy talking about the game, like callouts in PvP, but usually the constant conversation about day-to-day life stresses me out and takes me out of the experience I am trying to enjoy. (I hate CO-OP in story modes, because I can’t focus on the experience AT ALL) This probably sounds funny to some people, but I bet for A LOT of solo players this is one of their main reasons for preferring the Lone-Wolf. THE STOP-START EXPERIENCE WITH GROUPS IS GRATING: Play a match. One person leaves. 5 Minutes in Orbit till someone else can join. Play a match, two people leave. Find replacements. Another 5 minutes. This tends to stress me out a lot. I don’t know if I am coming off as a whiny wuss, but I wanted to shed some light on why a lot of Guardians might prefer to play Solo. Maybe I am way off base. Comments will let me know I guess. EDIT: There appears to be some confusion here so I will clarify. I don't want Destiny to change. It should be a social game. It's awesome that way. I DO have a good time in 90% of Fireteams. I play with people all the time. The ONLY thing I would want either removed or tweaked is Skill Based Matchmaking. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT. I'm just trying to give a perspective of why players choose to play Solo. Even with friends, not everyone can beat a Raid or go Flawless in Trials, and that is the way it should be. I LOVE DESTINY.

  • D1 Vet from day one with 3400+ hours mainly focused around crucible as well Did every raid except Wrath of the machine because I did not enjoy the loot or glitches that came with said raid. To be honest I too suffer from anxiety and fear of being social. It kills me when I get asked to do a raid or do a nightfall or even trials because I don't do those things often. In D1 I stuck to clash control iron banner and mayhem sometimes I tried supremacy and rift but most times it was control or clash. I got all three of my D1 characters to 400 light without doing many raids and without going flawless more than once and I achieved 400 really quick. I just stuck to doing a bunch of iron banner.

  • It would be cool if the game could scale difficulty so groups of 1 to 6 could do each piece of PvE content but that seems unlikely. They made a point of saying they want Destiny to be like hanging out at the pub with friends and I assume they'll stick to the social component. Realistically if you want solo pve stuff might need to look to another game

Way off for me. I play solo a lot of times or with my husband because I like going on short adventures and doing the daily activities so I can focus on socializing and clan stuff later without having to run back to the tower or anything. I like chatting about things and working with players who have a social life as well as everyday lives.

you hit the nail on the head why some people like solo. asking friends to help you can make you feel like your bothering them. i have people on my friends list but often times I go to recruitment for help.

    • Then good luck finishing a raid. If you're too selfish to communicate with your team, you don't deserve any of the loot.

All of this AND I have a girlfriend and kid that takes priority to a videogame. I may have 4 hours to dedicate to playing videogames, but that 4 hours is also dedicated to being a good parent and boyfriend. I had to back out leaving my random fireteam down a guardian just last night because my 2 year old woke up crying/scared in the middle of a strike. Sorry guys, but that comes first. Usually my time to play comes after everyone has gone to bed so chatting, even if I wanted to has to be kept kinda quiet. My girlfriend is a light sleeper so I have to play with headphones so she can sleep. Makes it difficult to be chatty when I play. I'd love to be a part of a group, make some new friends and all, but for these reasons, and OPs I just stick to goin alone. Until I can find a group that doesn't mind me backing out randomly, or at least going afk for periods of time, and isn't going to put the requirements of a mic on everything, I'll still to doing what I love on my own.

        • If you create a clan, I'll join you. I hate always dreading the people I'll come across by finding randos. I don't like talking either, I just want to match with people who know what they are doing and shout out when necessary. Build a safe place and they will come. Not kidding... Add me

        • agree with a lot of that, thank you for posting and taking the time to write and that you wrote in a thoughtful way. so, our clan-of-3 is RL-brothers. we like playing together, we know each other very well, it's comfortable, and it gives us a chance to just chat about nonsense since we live far away from each other. we'll spend hours doing jumping-nonsense at the Reef, or sitting at Crota, just bullshiatting to each other, and talking and theorizing and occasionally trying/wiping. but sometimes (no, actually a lot of times) we each like playing solo, or even mark the xbox as offline if you don't even want to get messaged by someone. we've played D1 to death (well ok not so much raids lol) and so we don't mind each other barging in. but for D2, it's all still so new to us, and it's really nice to solo the story just to experience it without any influence even from the people most important to us. it's also really nice to have someone stand at your shoulder / back. but only if it's the right person. esp. now, some of the planetary questories have some really ugly super-long darkness/nospawn zones where it really bites to wipe solo and be set like 5 stages back. or in D1, one of our best stories is a Nightfall where 2 of us died and the 3rd brother was sitting up in a semi-cheese spot with a sniper on the Archon Priest, and the three of us stayed there for literally 30+ extra minutes while he slowly, slowly worked on the Archon, because we were all unwilling to wipe. or, like, a few days ago picked up that Rat King progression and it requires more than 1 person. which, ok, I know I have brothers to count on, but it's kinda Bungie artificially forcing us to do that, which, boo :( I usually don't mind strike matchmaking, is always entertaining even when it turns bad/ugly. I generally don't want to voice-chat, either ppl don't care or e.g. my Titan (I still have no idea how to use lol) gets scolded for using FeedbackFence (wuuuuut?! I love those! and someone takes the time/effort to complain about the fact to me, on party chat?!) - and also, over the last 3 years of D1, the 3 of us actually made 2 really, really good friends. (who, TBH, those two are ***way*** better than us at the game lol!) - and we really enjoy playing with them and voice chatting with them, but, yeah, sometimes it can be too much. sometimes you just want to shut off all the noise and grind solo, the grind is real / the grind is medetation. or experience the story solo and interpret the story in only your own way. I really like what one of the other Guardians posted in this thread, "We should totally not hang out and play destiny." ha. so, I think I get it. again, thanks for being brave enough to post your thoughts.

          • There are also a bunch of quests right now for exotics that require dumb stuff like " kill fallen in EDZ while in the air"...or "kill powerful enemies with Drang"... The last thing you want is for your fireteam or clan to see you dying over and over firing at a huge servitor for 5 minutes straight with a tiny sidearm.

            • Sometimes i feel like getting on a fireteam and sometimes i don't. I definitely need my alone time to game every now and then. I think that's the way most players are. One thing that has always bothered me about playing Destiny solo is going up against fireteams in PvP. It's so frustrating. I wish Bungie would have a solo only lobby or at least have better matchmaking to put fireteams up against other fireteams.

Yeah mate I'm sure most people understand some if not all those reasons. I feel everything should have matchmaking including nightfall and raid aswell. If I matchmake for the raid I don't expect to complete it. I just want some experience without joining a "must know what to do" group. Everything is easier with practice I believe. Sometimes when I'm playing I'm not home alone so being on mic sometimes just doesn't work and I want to play casually. Casually includes nightfall and normal mode raids because lets be honest, in a few weeks the raid will be just another thing to quickly grind for gear to get up to hard mode standards

            • Yeah you just about nailed it. When I play I want to escape and relax and do what my heart desires. I dont want all the waiting, talking and feeling obligated and commited to something I may not be enjoying. I just want to turn my brain off and focus on having fun. I really wanna do the raid but it feels way to stressful to enjoy. I work long days all over nyc and the last thing I wanna do is get caught up in all the limbo and wait and pressure of other people. I have enough of that during the day. Dont get me wrong I love talking and hanging with people just not while gaming...lol weird idk But as we all know it does prevent you from doing raids etc I just dont know anybody that plays Destiny and playing with random people just gives me a sense of pressure and I cant concentrate. Mm strikes and crucible is fine but forming a fireteam just isnt my thing.

            • That's fair. It's a hassle sometimes to get people together. The problem is if there's not a full fire team or there's one or two too many. That makes it weird.

I don't play with people because I feel that i'm one of the few who really know what "playing as a team" mean. Most people just rush everywhere, killing everything and expecting tons of loot without caring about its teammates. I don't.

            • Totally agree.. I love team stuff but just not all the time, but I don't mind playing a particular game all the time I just can't always be bothered with having a team at all times to have fun.

            • Everything you said is how I feel. I'd rather play the game than spend time, which has been up to 30 minutes, getting a group going. More solo content please.

            • Dude. Yes. Sometimes at the end of the day, NOT talking is exactly what I want to do cause I've been talking to people at work all day haha. I LOVE playing with friends, but it is pretty tough work to get five real life friends who have time to put into a raid. Hoping that process goes better in D2 for me cause most of my raid experiences were rushed and didn't get to settle in and see the sights.

            • Yeah i play solo most the time because of wife and kid. Obviously doing raids and stuff like that you need to mic it up. But very easy activities like the nightfalls just post in lfg need 2 no mic required. Always get snapped up in seconds.

            • I also played d1 well over 3k hours. I also have a large friends list that returned, with probably even more ive added from other games in between waiting for d2 to come out. I was once pretty good at the crucible, and not when it was all abilities. I was at my best when everyone was using the same 2 or 3 guns = the house of wolves era. Just a side bar of at least a little opinion, but isn't that the definition of balance? that's another topic for another day. I have a friends list full of great pvp players, most of which are better than pretty much everyone reading this post, including myself. I still just want to play solo pvp. It isnt for a single one of the reasons the op listed, but rather just because i just dont find it fun. In the right setting it is great to play in a group, but that setting is in an arranged private match. It takes no skill to pop in a full team of people youre famililar with playing with and queueing up against randos. The game has been out a week. I am consistently playing against full premades when the raid just came out today. You're telling me that you have 2/3 of a raid team right there, all in the same clan, and none of you can leave the crucible for five minutes to even try it out? Like i just got home from basically being gone for work for around 11 hours and thats what i immediately walk into? I get it if pvp is your thing, so thats what you will do, but how is it fun to do the thing that you pride yourself in being so good at with an advantage? This game currently has the biggest playerbase of probably any game in the world. Why do we only have 2 queues? Ive played games where there are only several hundred active players with double the queues. Why not have a solo queue?
