Why Some People Don't Want to Play With a Fireteam

Hi, I’m a D1 player who logged over 3000 hours. I play Crucible all the time, it’s my favorite Destiny Activity. I’m decent, not great. (I hate Rumble BTW. Ironic, I know. I actually live for being a team player) I did all the Raids, a lot. (I didn’t get Rise of Iron) I was in a very successful Clan in D1(Knights of the Phoenix) I have a lot friends on my friendlist. So why do I, and other people, prefer to play solo 90% of the time? There are several reasons, and I will try to be as concise as possible. I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO PLAY: When I get home, if I have time, I just want to jump into whatever activity I feel like playing. I don’t want to see who is online, what activity they are doing, jump into their party, ask them if they want to do what I want to do, wait in orbit, wait for two other people to join, or respond to my messages, and THEN deal with the apology messages of, sorry already full etc etc. I HAVE EMOTIONAL ANGST ABOUT THESE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: When I ask for friends to join me who are engaged in another activity I feel like I am bothering them. Whether this is true or not, this is how it makes me feel, and I would rather not deal with it. I DON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE TALKING: Often times in these groups people are chatting away about their personal life, and it can be overwhelming to me. I DO enjoy talking about the game, like callouts in PvP, but usually the constant conversation about day-to-day life stresses me out and takes me out of the experience I am trying to enjoy. (I hate CO-OP in story modes, because I can’t focus on the experience AT ALL) This probably sounds funny to some people, but I bet for A LOT of solo players this is one of their main reasons for preferring the Lone-Wolf. THE STOP-START EXPERIENCE WITH GROUPS IS GRATING: Play a match. One person leaves. 5 Minutes in Orbit till someone else can join. Play a match, two people leave. Find replacements. Another 5 minutes. This tends to stress me out a lot. I don’t know if I am coming off as a whiny wuss, but I wanted to shed some light on why a lot of Guardians might prefer to play Solo. Maybe I am way off base. Comments will let me know I guess. EDIT: There appears to be some confusion here so I will clarify. I don't want Destiny to change. It should be a social game. It's awesome that way. I DO have a good time in 90% of Fireteams. I play with people all the time. The ONLY thing I would want either removed or tweaked is Skill Based Matchmaking. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT. I'm just trying to give a perspective of why players choose to play Solo. Even with friends, not everyone can beat a Raid or go Flawless in Trials, and that is the way it should be. I LOVE DESTINY.

I've had a similar experience. I'm pretty introverted, so I always prefer solo play. It means I can play when I want and not have to worry if my friends are available. My ability to play is often spotty, and I'm constantly interrupted by my family, so team play isn't always in the cards for me. With Bungie making D2 less solo friendly, it has lessened its replay value for me.

    • Spot on for me. Played about 3000 hours on D1, did everything a solo player could do in pve and then played pvp for almost 2 years without touching pve again. Never done a raid or a nightfall. Im going to suffer it and do the end game content in D2. Social anxiety is real, i catch rattlesnakes and race cars for fun but a room full of people will send me running.

    • Sorry bud, but Destiny 2 will most likely continue on to be a social game with few things to do solo.

      • I'm with you on the story mission CO-OP. It's easy to miss a lot of story details when trying to listen to the game and the chat at the same time...

        • Only started playing Destiny today (free trial on Xbox). Maybe the mechanic is too clever for me, but I haven't yet found the 'random fireteam' link that drops you into a 3... So I've played solo so far. Does this thread imply that there is no such quick matchmaking feature?

          • Well said! I completely agree. I have good and bad days in game, a family, work but I love the escapism gaming offers for short bursts. When I hear raids going on for hours I'd love to join in too but cannot justify the time or emotional investment in chatting to folk who are sooooo clued upon what to do when in a Raid or strike. I actually tried vault of glass once for 1 hour then apologised for dying all the time and holding them back and dropped out. Never went back. It looked great, this tolkienesque, star warsian adventure to other worlds and fantastic caverns but couldn't join in. I'm told you need to be able to communicate with folk in a raid but I never do in a strike and always come out on top even after the obligatory last minute last guardian standing - boss with a millimetre of life left- epic fail...D2 is phenomenal and I hope you enjoy the ride. I'll just continue to crash my way through it all

          • Social anxieties are a real thing, and they don't only apply to face to face encounters. You guys need to educate yourselves before you come around spewing garbage at someone with a disability.

            • Exactly. This is why I belong to a Deaf clan. I never know how to reply to comments or questions. I love playing along with other players but I don't like talking.

              • i'am playing solo a lot too. Maby if developers create smooth mechanic to fainding other ppl for activit with i want to do, when i click on flage to start mission or anything like that there sould be option faind grp, there should be clan chat aswell not voice, text chat normal chat window where i can write what i want and somone can respond to it or not. That would resolve a lot of problms with solo playing

As someone who is on the far end of the introvert spectrum, I can sympathize with you on all of this. Even when my friends or clan mates invite me to the Nightfall or Raid, I get stressed out and get cold feet 90% of the time.

                  • I can relate to some of those points tbh, except for the Rumble part because that is something I want in Destiny 2, really annoyed they removed it :( I guess I can go back to Trials carries soon though which is nice, solo queue gets boring/annoying too quick for me.

                  • Yup, don't always feel like talking. Sometimes I just want to chill and kill pixels. I don't need someone's voice in my head while I try to relax.

                    • I can understand and even somewhat relate to what you wrote. I use to appear offline all the time to play games and not have to worry about anybody "bothering" me when I just wanted to play something alone. I still have moments and sometimes days where I just don't want to deal with people, friend or stranger doesn't matter I just don't have it in me to keep up that acceptable social norm front sometimes. I can be a rough around the edges, mean, arrogant, cold hearted, apathetic prick sometimes and I know that can rub people the wrong way so I have to censor myself quite a bit to maintain any semblance of social relationships. I know this and understand this about myself and most of my friends do to but I can still be tough be around sometimes if that makes sense. So there are times where yes I can play a game with people but seriously have absolutely zero desire to talk or interact with them on a personal or more social level. I did stop appearing offline though and just started telling everybody no I don't want to join the party I am just gonna play solo. I also do get irritated sometimes when we will all hop in a party and end up talking nonsense about nothing truly important for an hour and a half before finally playing the game. Normally I am fine with it and enjoy it, i really do like talking and joking with friends but when you only have roughly 2 hours to play something I don't feel like losing over half that time not playing. I just started speaking up though and saying hey guys I only got like 2 hours can we get this thing going or what? Then we start playing and return to joking around once the game starts. Basically I do understand and honestly didn't think there was a large portion of people that didn't understand why someone would want to play solo.

                    • Hopefully the clan I am with will cater to players that feel like that. The main reason I joined is because they talk about silent lone-wolf guardians in the clan description. Its horrible hearing people slating others in the same fireteam, there's no need for it at all.

                      • Spot on mate. In D1 I did some story missions in co-op and they were talking over the story elements and skipping things because they'd done them already. I love raiding but the rest of the time only want to join stuff when I want to. Had one kid on my friends list that would jump into my fireteam the second I got to orbit after logging in and it's just so annoying to feel pressured to do the stuff he wanted to do before I've had a chance to get my bearings
