Why Some People Don't Want to Play With a Fireteam

Hi, I’m a D1 player who logged over 3000 hours. I play Crucible all the time, it’s my favorite Destiny Activity. I’m decent, not great. (I hate Rumble BTW. Ironic, I know. I actually live for being a team player) I did all the Raids, a lot. (I didn’t get Rise of Iron) I was in a very successful Clan in D1(Knights of the Phoenix) I have a lot friends on my friendlist. So why do I, and other people, prefer to play solo 90% of the time? There are several reasons, and I will try to be as concise as possible. I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO PLAY: When I get home, if I have time, I just want to jump into whatever activity I feel like playing. I don’t want to see who is online, what activity they are doing, jump into their party, ask them if they want to do what I want to do, wait in orbit, wait for two other people to join, or respond to my messages, and THEN deal with the apology messages of, sorry already full etc etc. I HAVE EMOTIONAL ANGST ABOUT THESE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: When I ask for friends to join me who are engaged in another activity I feel like I am bothering them. Whether this is true or not, this is how it makes me feel, and I would rather not deal with it. I DON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE TALKING: Often times in these groups people are chatting away about their personal life, and it can be overwhelming to me. I DO enjoy talking about the game, like callouts in PvP, but usually the constant conversation about day-to-day life stresses me out and takes me out of the experience I am trying to enjoy. (I hate CO-OP in story modes, because I can’t focus on the experience AT ALL) This probably sounds funny to some people, but I bet for A LOT of solo players this is one of their main reasons for preferring the Lone-Wolf. THE STOP-START EXPERIENCE WITH GROUPS IS GRATING: Play a match. One person leaves. 5 Minutes in Orbit till someone else can join. Play a match, two people leave. Find replacements. Another 5 minutes. This tends to stress me out a lot. I don’t know if I am coming off as a whiny wuss, but I wanted to shed some light on why a lot of Guardians might prefer to play Solo. Maybe I am way off base. Comments will let me know I guess. EDIT: There appears to be some confusion here so I will clarify. I don't want Destiny to change. It should be a social game. It's awesome that way. I DO have a good time in 90% of Fireteams. I play with people all the time. The ONLY thing I would want either removed or tweaked is Skill Based Matchmaking. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT. I'm just trying to give a perspective of why players choose to play Solo. Even with friends, not everyone can beat a Raid or go Flawless in Trials, and that is the way it should be. I LOVE DESTINY.

  • I get where you are coming from but I like a game to stay true to its intended function and for destiny that's team based activities. I always get a little concerned when I see stuff like this as it is understandable but conflicts with what destiny is and I don't want to see destiny re modeled to fit the least common denominator. I also have a clan that was made with some friends I and we have been recruiting new people and I'm personally a little sketchy as the clan was originally meant for people we have known and played with for a fair bit of time. We need the clan to grow so we can level faster so I'm willing to let people in I just am a little anxious about that.

  • I did write a massive reply about what it's like for us solo players. especially people like me with social autism and social anxiety, ADD, and far too little empathy to care about people unless it benifits me in some way. which is what people do with people or things in their life anyway, but as someone who can't lie, I often get slated for it for some reason even though they asked. if I don't care about something, and you ask, your gonna get the truth. im not being mean. just being honest.. being me. it's actually a good thing so you don't waste your time with it/me about that situation. I like coop. I love coop actually. just prefer to do it without talking, like darksouls or destiny strikes. but the strikes are fruitless. and d2 does not cater to solo players. and their idea to "help" solo players still involves keeping the end game content behind a social barrier which a lot of us don't want to, or can't, pass. i will happily look up "how to" on raids. like I did with Crotas end and how to solo it. for both versions. and did so. (love that glowhoo) it would be nice if solo players could get access to the raid gear through strikes(harder ones preferably as they are too easy atm. with matchmaking at some point down the line. like 3 months after each raid is released its contents get added to the strikes possible rewards. so that we can all enjoy and those who did the raid get to show off for bit still. I completed all the game and content at the time, and got to 272 light by the third day. I'm bored of destiny already. I thought, and hoped it would be different.. better.. than just a copy paste of d1. at least there is a really nice coop game finally coming to console early next year ^-^ monster hunter.. yays!. anyway. my two cents. I honestly don't care about what people think. but if speaking up means something might get done, then at least there is a chance that it will benifit me in the future, and therfore other solo players. so there are more people out there who don't invite me to a clan every 15mins X'D it's cod and warframe all over again x3

    • I'm usually playing while I'm talking with my wife and she's watching TV shows or doing other things. Plus I like being able to jump between different activities without having to ask what the group wants to do. There's a lot of reasons to solo play. Bungie should make it a good experience for all types of players when they set up their matchmaking algorithms.

      • +1 for actually reinforcing your point of view and preferences rather than leaving your post as simple as "-blam!- solo queue crucible, it's broken and unplayable"

        • Same. I'll jump in a party chat for raids because it's a must but that's it. When I play I want to get away from ppl so talking to a bunch of randoms is not relaxing to me. I talk all day on the phone for a living so that's the last thing I want to do when getting home.

        • I like playing solo. I like playing with other Guardians. There's a reason certain people make the weekly friends list cut. I clean up my list every few weeks. Every person on my friends list is someone I found to be enjoyable to play/talk with. It's not called a random list for a reason. 👍

            • Nailed it. All but the anxiety thing apply to me. Your first answer is probably the single biggest reason for me. Heck, I've changed my status to offline at times to lessen the chances of being spammed with fireteam requests.

Glad to know that there are more like me. I do wish that there was an option to do reduced difficulty strikes and nightfall as a solo player. I generally don't like joining people as I tend to be a little slow in play and I hate holding my team mates or randoms back. The timed nightfall is a complete no no for me because of this. Although this game purports to want solo players it really doesn't.

            • I prefer to play solo because I also have limited time to play and I hate spending upwards to 15-20 minutes at a time waiting for friends who go afk or go do something. I purposely have my online status show offline 90% of the time. I'm not against fire teams as a whole, I can deal well with people who want to get stuff done or understand having a time restraint.

            • Sounds like PUG problems to me. I'm blessed with a tight group - we've been gaming together for around 6 years now, we all schedule raid groups well in advance as we're all in touch via Twitter. I hope you can find something like that. I really do, I couldnt imagine gaming without them.

              • I like to play solo as well. Just for the challenge mostly, you know completing activities that are supposed to require a team. Part of it is the fact that I just want to relax and shoot aliens or other guardians in the face (one of the few games that I like PvP and PvE in equal measures) However I don't have the anxiety issues, I enjoy playing this game with my friends IRL and my gaming friends.... It's just so difficult to find enough of them online to do the larger team activities!

                • I hear you man. I have 2 kids and I work in construction so I start really early. I'm up at 4:30 and by the time the kids are in bed it's 9 by 11 I've fallen asleep on the couch with the remote in my hand. So all that wasted time looking at what my friends are doing or looking for someone to join is not productive.

                • Totally get it. I like to play solo a lot too. I however don't mind playing with others as long as their goals are the same as mine otherwise I'm spinning my wheels. I have a large group of friends as well a dedicated small group of people I regularly play with but.......... Sometimes I have 4hours and I can't get anything going and sometimes I have Less than an hour and of course that is when I get the Raid invite. Lol I do think the addition of the Clans or I should say the final implementation of Clans was a must for Destiny 2. It really helps out the Solo Player or the players that like to play in a small group and allows them to reap the rewards as well feel like they contributed to the group.

                • Feel the same way, created a clan of lone wolves if anyone is interested on ps4, if only so folks like us dont miss out on clan rewards. literally dont care if noone talks to each other or plays together, heck most of the time i play silent due to my odd schedule.

                    • For those people who are saying you get stressed out when getting invited by your friends or get cold feet; go seek help. That isn't normal behavior; your friends should excite you to play with them that's what friends are for....to enjoy activities together

I've had a similar experience. I'm pretty introverted, so I always prefer solo play. It means I can play when I want and not have to worry if my friends are available. My ability to play is often spotty, and I'm constantly interrupted by my family, so team play isn't always in the cards for me. With Bungie making D2 less solo friendly, it has lessened its replay value for me.
