Why Some People Don't Want to Play With a Fireteam

Hi, I’m a D1 player who logged over 3000 hours. I play Crucible all the time, it’s my favorite Destiny Activity. I’m decent, not great. (I hate Rumble BTW. Ironic, I know. I actually live for being a team player) I did all the Raids, a lot. (I didn’t get Rise of Iron) I was in a very successful Clan in D1(Knights of the Phoenix) I have a lot friends on my friendlist. So why do I, and other people, prefer to play solo 90% of the time? There are several reasons, and I will try to be as concise as possible. I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO PLAY: When I get home, if I have time, I just want to jump into whatever activity I feel like playing. I don’t want to see who is online, what activity they are doing, jump into their party, ask them if they want to do what I want to do, wait in orbit, wait for two other people to join, or respond to my messages, and THEN deal with the apology messages of, sorry already full etc etc. I HAVE EMOTIONAL ANGST ABOUT THESE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: When I ask for friends to join me who are engaged in another activity I feel like I am bothering them. Whether this is true or not, this is how it makes me feel, and I would rather not deal with it. I DON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE TALKING: Often times in these groups people are chatting away about their personal life, and it can be overwhelming to me. I DO enjoy talking about the game, like callouts in PvP, but usually the constant conversation about day-to-day life stresses me out and takes me out of the experience I am trying to enjoy. (I hate CO-OP in story modes, because I can’t focus on the experience AT ALL) This probably sounds funny to some people, but I bet for A LOT of solo players this is one of their main reasons for preferring the Lone-Wolf. THE STOP-START EXPERIENCE WITH GROUPS IS GRATING: Play a match. One person leaves. 5 Minutes in Orbit till someone else can join. Play a match, two people leave. Find replacements. Another 5 minutes. This tends to stress me out a lot. I don’t know if I am coming off as a whiny wuss, but I wanted to shed some light on why a lot of Guardians might prefer to play Solo. Maybe I am way off base. Comments will let me know I guess. EDIT: There appears to be some confusion here so I will clarify. I don't want Destiny to change. It should be a social game. It's awesome that way. I DO have a good time in 90% of Fireteams. I play with people all the time. The ONLY thing I would want either removed or tweaked is Skill Based Matchmaking. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT. I'm just trying to give a perspective of why players choose to play Solo. Even with friends, not everyone can beat a Raid or go Flawless in Trials, and that is the way it should be. I LOVE DESTINY.

  • You need Prozac, lots of it. Or cocaine, lots of it. Or just get your head out of your ass and stop being so stressed out. It's a game. Play solo, no need to post and be an attention seeker and crawl back in your turtle shell. And again Prozac or cocaine. Or both. And lots of it.

    • So much of all this. And on my own end, while I've got a fair number of friends who play, my own schedule keeps me starting later than most of them. I'm not about to start bugging people for fireteam space when they're already mid-activity, so I just tend to run solo.

    • I prefer to play alone too, but when my friends are feeling chatty I jump at the chance to talk because I don't literally spend all my time not playing videogames talking to people.

        • When I do feel like playing with friends, it is extremely fun and a totally different game for me. I do play at a MUCH slower pace than most of my friends though so I prefer to roll alone and not slow them down. I do have one friend on my list that has the exact same play style as I and when we sync up and are able to make some runs together, it is quite fun and relaxing. Yes, this is a multiplayer game. I understand that. It is rather difficult to find more than one or two people that like to simply relax, run around and shoot shit while looking for loot and just taking in the scenery until we actually want some heat. Don't get me wrong though... When I jump into the strike list, I always try and be the first to jump into the middle of the action. Hell, that's what strike are about! Same with Public Events. I love doing them and going face to face with as many enemies as I can. It's part of the experience. The majority of the time, I just like to run as the lone wolf though.

Im not trying to be rude here but i will be honest, while what im about to mention might not directly apply to you but to the solo players that complain about things not being fair. Now dont get me wrong i have no problem with you and other people wanting to play solo, i play solo myself about 60% of the time, but logic would dictate that if you dont want to play with other people then you probably shouldnt be playing a game that constantly for the past 3 years has drilled into your head that its a multiplayer game , its constantly in your face with fireteam this fireteam that, like i said its fine if you want to play solo but just dont be one of those people that expect to have the same or similar experience to those who play with friends. Dont be surprised if youre put at an obvious disadvantage when youre playing a team based multiplayer game by yourself, like i said it might not apply to you at all. Everyone has been told right from the beggining so generally theres no real excuse to complain about it.

            • That's fine and all if you want to play solo, hell I play solo from time to time, but I've never understood the complaint about there being too much multiplayer in a multiplayer game. I mean right from the beginning it's been heavily advertised as an online multiplayer game. It's so much more fun when played with friends the way it was meant to be played. If you're truly not enjoying it for the lack of a more solo experience, then there are plenty of single player games to choose from.

            • For me, it's more so that I can't form a friendship with somebody without turning it into a toxic bond built on mistrust, anger, and straight up envy. I'm too -blam!-ing full of myself to admit that some people deserve a friend regardless of the way they play, or how much they dedicate their lives to video gaming. Whenever I'm friendless, I see this clearly, but the toxicity returns when I form a friendship with a group of people.

            • I play mostly solo and no crucible because I have bad internet that I can't do anything about. I don't want to waste anyone else's time waiting on me to load over and over. I even felt bad earlier because I got booted while helping a lower level do a heroic event. Hopefully fiber internet is only a few months away.....

            • I can relate to a lot of what you said. I also have an intense dislike for asshats, yet somehow attract them like a moth to flame. Mostly I handle these encounters as politely as possible, by exiting stage left immediately......although I've had older players screaming at younger players to "stop F'ing up", which I do NOT let go. Rather ruins the entire reason to play the game

                • All of this.... And when I run solo, like patrolling in destiny 2 now, I am constantly on the move. Grab this chest, get the dusk shard, in and out of lost sector, hit public event, and just keep moving. If I have to wait for people to catch up to me, it kills my grind-time efforts I could be maximizing.

                  • If you don't have time to play multiplayer games, why did you bother to even buy Destiny 2 in the first place? Destiny in general is built on forming a Fireteam to conquer great challenges. Solo play is is not what this game advertises, it advertises a Fireteam in action. Bungie has tried to allow solo players to enjoy high-level activities by creating multiple options to get high level gear and even adding in Guided Games. Bungie has tried they hardest to address solo play without ruining other parts of the game. I'm sorry to say this, but if you can only play solo then this game is not meant for you.

The only reason I've been playing destiny mainly alone for the past 2 years is because my two friends who still play it don't have an Xbox one. other than that I just can't stand other people, my two friends are the only people I can really stand to play games with.

                    • All this + most people are quite unpleasant. Maybe I just got bad lucky, but I ran into people screaming because of failures quite often. And I also love the background of listening to the radio when I'm engaged in grinding. I do not want to talk, I'm tired after work.
