Why Some People Don't Want to Play With a Fireteam

Hi, I’m a D1 player who logged over 3000 hours. I play Crucible all the time, it’s my favorite Destiny Activity. I’m decent, not great. (I hate Rumble BTW. Ironic, I know. I actually live for being a team player) I did all the Raids, a lot. (I didn’t get Rise of Iron) I was in a very successful Clan in D1(Knights of the Phoenix) I have a lot friends on my friendlist. So why do I, and other people, prefer to play solo 90% of the time? There are several reasons, and I will try to be as concise as possible. I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO PLAY: When I get home, if I have time, I just want to jump into whatever activity I feel like playing. I don’t want to see who is online, what activity they are doing, jump into their party, ask them if they want to do what I want to do, wait in orbit, wait for two other people to join, or respond to my messages, and THEN deal with the apology messages of, sorry already full etc etc. I HAVE EMOTIONAL ANGST ABOUT THESE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: When I ask for friends to join me who are engaged in another activity I feel like I am bothering them. Whether this is true or not, this is how it makes me feel, and I would rather not deal with it. I DON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE TALKING: Often times in these groups people are chatting away about their personal life, and it can be overwhelming to me. I DO enjoy talking about the game, like callouts in PvP, but usually the constant conversation about day-to-day life stresses me out and takes me out of the experience I am trying to enjoy. (I hate CO-OP in story modes, because I can’t focus on the experience AT ALL) This probably sounds funny to some people, but I bet for A LOT of solo players this is one of their main reasons for preferring the Lone-Wolf. THE STOP-START EXPERIENCE WITH GROUPS IS GRATING: Play a match. One person leaves. 5 Minutes in Orbit till someone else can join. Play a match, two people leave. Find replacements. Another 5 minutes. This tends to stress me out a lot. I don’t know if I am coming off as a whiny wuss, but I wanted to shed some light on why a lot of Guardians might prefer to play Solo. Maybe I am way off base. Comments will let me know I guess. EDIT: There appears to be some confusion here so I will clarify. I don't want Destiny to change. It should be a social game. It's awesome that way. I DO have a good time in 90% of Fireteams. I play with people all the time. The ONLY thing I would want either removed or tweaked is Skill Based Matchmaking. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT. I'm just trying to give a perspective of why players choose to play Solo. Even with friends, not everyone can beat a Raid or go Flawless in Trials, and that is the way it should be. I LOVE DESTINY.

  • Why people who play in a fireteam don't care why you play solo. We just don't.

    • Dude I beat every single raid encounter (except Oryx) with no mic. You've just gotta find a fireteam that's willing to give you a chance. And usually they're the better than the ones that boot you instantly if no mic.

      • I feel you. After seeing so many videos of toxic people and the "Ghorn or kick" phase every man, woman, and child went through, I never really bother with raids or nightfalls. Then The Taken King rolled around I was like "JUST SOLOED PRISON OF ELDERS BISH GET ON MY LEVEL"

        • Play solo, or don't, that's your choice. No one asked for an explanation, and no one wanted one. And most of your "reasons" sound selfish. Just sayin.

            • I think you're in the wrong kind of clan. I have the exact same reasons to not want to play as a fireteam but I joined a clan that has prescheduled events admin-led events that you sign up for. Each event is 2, maybe 3 hrs, maximum and everyone who signed up has to show up on time and stay for the whole event or else they get a strike against them. You can work off a strike but get too many and you're kicked from the clan. I know that sounds little stricter than some people like but, as someone who doesn't have much time to play and has social anxiety, it's great because I can plan when I play to get the most out of my time and mentally prep for it beforehand.

            • You my friend have nailed it. The true life of a solo player. As a solo d1 player. I can vouch all of this to be true.

            • Totally get the no party story mode thing. My friends wanted me to play with them when the game first came out but a party with them is just not stop -blam!-ing memes and I'd rather actually experience the story for once.

                  • for me its 3 things. 1. i dont like talking while im playing a game. ruins my experience when i have someone talking to me, regardless if its about the game or something of their private life i couldnt care less about. 2. whenever i play a game i always love to listen to the music. either the games music or the music blasting through my stereo, thats my nr. 1 reason why i dont like to party up with others in a nightfall or raid - or any game of that matter. 3. i do have more than enough time to play but i always have to help out my family every couple hours with something, so im pretty sure that would be very annoying during a raid. i can live without the nightfall, currently "powerful engrams" decrypt into lower power level gears anyways, so whats the point? im probably going to miss out on one or two weapons / armor pieces from raid but thats it. i did vog in destiny 1 like 2 or 3 times and didnt rly saw the appeal of it. wasnt bad, but wasnt that amazing either.

                  • I'm totally with you on all aspects. I like playing whatever I want at my own pace. Ive always been turned off by raids. Only completed VoG and Crota. Didn't bother with the rest after getting yelled at by teenagers too many times for my liking. Don't really like using a Mic either. Screw it. If you're down for some nightfall or other Mic-less activity, hit me up.

Hi, I'm the leader of a clan called Axiomatica. I made this clan specifically for myself and my personal friends. With Destiny 2's introduction of clan banners and clan levels I've been talking with my friends about opening our clan up to more people in the interest of increasing our clan rank faster. None of us are particularly interested in making new friends or running raids or anything like that, we just want to benefit from an increased clan rank. We're still considering if we even want to do this* but assuming we do my intention is to open the clan up to more people and advertise it as a clan for solo players who don't want to be bothered. There is no expectation of teaming up regularly or running specific activities at specific times, heck we may never even speak to each other. If anyone in this thread would like to benefit from and contribute to a clan rank then please keep me in mind. All I ask of any potential new members is that everyone contribute their weekly clan XP and be civil when interacting with other players (if at all). In the event that which I confirm that every current member is on board with this plan I will return to this thread with more information. If anyone is already interested please reply to this post, seeing whether or not people are actually interested in this will help us come to a final decision. *I'm pretty sure we will but I still need to get in contact with one member to make sure they're ok with this. EDIT: We're on XBone. Can't believe I forgot to include the platform.

                    • the raids shoud be sth like arenas in D1, but with many rooms/steps, thats it, no communication needed, just ability to shot, think fast etc. this should be a game, not a -blam!-ing mad house

                    • As a soloist myself, I am sick of facing hordes of enemies surrounding me all the time. We need a companion to help out, preferably a Carrier Prime to pick up and store ammo for me since "Out of Ammo" hasn't been fixed in pve.

                          • I just don't like being in parties often. I'll do it like three times a week, I just love me time. And I feel obligated to do what others want when they're in my fireteam.

                          • At it's best team play is so much fun. However at it's worst it's miserable and unfortunately I seem to experience it at it's worst alot more than at it's best. Bungie is really hung up on team play. It's good for them to hear your story.

                              • You need to get a group of good friends (I have a group of 7 including myself that all met playing Destiny 1). Because you can find like-minded people that feel the same as you, so you'll have a team but not the annoyances. Destiny is a team game. Some would even say an MMO. So if you're a solo player, Destiny probably isn't for you. :/
