They are just a cheap way of artificially extending the lifespan of the game. Fair enough, if the game is at the end of its lifespan then it's a quick way of creating more incentive to play.
Otherwise, would you rather play the game and be motivated by a good narrative, or because an inconsequential book node told you so?

You ever play borderlands 2? They had Badass ranks where if you completed different things through the game you would get these points to spend to upgrade fire rate, gun damage...etc Now I'm not asking for the point system, but it was cool to look through and say "hey I need to kill x amount to finish this off". It was just a little thing that I thought was cool. Something to look back and say "wow, I killed 5k dreggs"

I like looking up stats, enemy kills etc, definitely. I would just like the books to be better contextualised in the game universe. Having "books" with no link to the universe makes what they're trying to do with them very transparent, ie to extend the games lifespan by making you do menial tasks. At least contextualise it - instead of a book called "things to do in destiny 2", why not have a "vex mind core" or a "cabal sever console" to decode, that grounds your actions into a meaningful narrative. No, I've never played borderlands (destiny is my first MMO/RPG sort of game, there's definitely no time for 2 franchises!)
