"The Speaker is actually the Consul" theory...?

I've seen many videos on YT talking about this weird theory, but I don't understand why people gives so much credit to it. Nothing new about that the Speaker could have a dark side, but... be The Consul? How do you get so far?  We know that the Consul is a Cabal Political Leader behind Ghaul's ascent as Military Emperor. We know that thanks to him, Ghaul managed to usurp the throne to Calus and exile him. But according to our sources this happened thousands years before Destiny's events. THOUSANDS. The Speaker was not even there... he was revived like every other Guardian by a Ghost. He is a Warlock. We know this. So esactly why do you think that the Speaker may be the Consul actually?

  • Thanks to the leaked edge magazine article we know the final boss is a shapeshifter. So Gary isn't the final boss. The consul must be final boss thus a shapshifter. It's possible that the speaker is the consul. Would also explain two voice actors. In homecoming the speaker is "missing" or "kidnapped" or "dead" but he just shapeshifts into a cabal or the consul when no one is looking. Just a theory.

  • There is no actual argument. It is just people who are used to plot twists where the leader of the good guys is secretly undermining their efforts as the one behind the enemy.

  • I think this could play out . Some how the speaker first came in contact with the traveler it changed him . Now since the light is locked away from all it may have re awoken him and that's why he is nowhere insight plus his tower place and machine do hickey is completely gone . May be far fetched but we will see

  • They are two different voice actors so that doesn't make sense.

    • Even if he was the consul, so what? He has had very very little character development and is in only 2 cutscenes throughout everything (i think). All we know is he's been here for a while, he's a warlock, and he's like the 2nd of the pope (the traveler is the pope)

    • Well the speaker was here on earth the whole time, and the consul was thousands of miles away. I dont think they are the same person.

    • Not that anyone of us (or possibly even bungie themselves) really know, but I immediately disregard any lore theory that the speaker is secretly (insert crazy idea/character here). The whole speaker is evil, or is Taox, or is somehow a puppet of Savathun or one of the nine, etc were all theories floating around. Other than the speaker being so vague and undeveloped as a character that he could literally be anyone or anything (I mean, have you ever actually seen sweeper bot and the speaker in the same room??!?!) there is no proof or even hint that he is related at all to anything cabal or anything else.

        • Speaker had a roll to play in Staten's story for sure. Now all theories are absolutely pointless because they "exited" him effectively in Homecoming. You know, or they pick the theory they like best from Reddit and force it into a dlc subplot in two years.

          • I don't get the speculation of a character that we only have a name and voice actor for. We find out he exists and people freak out and say "What if he's X or Y?" When the game hasn't even come out yet

            • They're listed as different voice actors so it would be weird if two people played the same character.

I'll be the first to point out the holes and silliness in the Destiny narrative, but even I (want to) give Bungie more credit than to make the Speaker the bad guy. We've been talking about that on the forum since day 1 of the original beta. It's way too obvious. It's too...Scooby Doo.

                  • Generational cynicism. You have a generation that feels it has been failed by authority and by societal institutions. So you have this segment of the fanbase that almost desperately wants to see the Speaker as this corrupt/evil figure. I think the fact that he's portrayed as something of a religious leader in the City also plays into it.

                    • This theory is ridiculous, the idea that THIS WHOLE TIME, the speaker had actually been working against us, is ridiculous. It legitimately just doesn't make sense.

                          • The lack of information on the Speaker breeds rampant speculation and conspiracy theories. Even ones that can't possibly work. Personally, I think the Speaker is exactly what he looks like, a faction rep for the Traveller. Anything more would indicate long term planning on the part of the writers and there's no evidence of that throughout Destiny.
