Well LA is about 5-6 hours from Las Vegas, so it's not like it's just down the street.
LA is about 2.5-3.5 [depending on traffic] hours north of San Diego, too.
SoCal traffic is heavy and fast. Our freeways are 6-8 lanes in each direction, and if you're doing under 75mph you're going too slow. But most cities are easy to find your way around. LA has shitty public parking situations. Google Maps is your best friend.
The best part about California driving is freeways, exits, and streets are usually very well marked.

It's not exclusive to California, but there are a lot of places where you'll be on the freeway and need to take Main Street exit, but the sign for Main Street exit will be like...RIGHT AT THE EXIT and there's no time to get over to the exit lane.
