If I were given to conspiracy theories, I'd say "identity politics" is a ploy to divide and conquer. So long as we continue hating each other(The other side, right or left), we aren't hating our government. We have plenty of fingers and places to point. Let the people fight amongst themselves. Business will still go on, as usual.
