It wouldn't have been so bad if the gear that followed was of equal or better value to that being left behind instead of just being mediocre shit.

I completely agree. Would have had no problem putting down my Fatebringer for a better weapon. Problem was, the new weapons were dog poop so they artificially weakened our old gear to make up for it. A very lazy and hallow strategy that left a lot of players saying WTF!?
