The current group might be a revival of those ancient practices, depending on who you ask, or it might be the same group which has existed uninterrupted for thousands of years. Anything pre-Enlightenment gets hazy because the occult was very well hidden before that time. In the end, it's irrelevant, they believe the same things and have the same goals. Satan is merely one cultural expression among many throughout time of the malevolent occult force that they worship.

Moloch is another interpretation, as is Lucifer. (Satan and Lucifer were conflated in religious tradition over time, but they began as nominally separate entities. Look it up.)
