I think it started with Laurence, he used the blood of the Great Ones in attempt to ascend humanity while forgetting the adage: "Fear the old blood."
Yharnamites were given blood ministrations using Great Ones blood. While this healed wounds and cured diseases, it was also the source of the Scourge; the lycanthropy that cursed Yharnamites.
