Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to happen. When the initial nerf hit, I figured that this was a misstep on Bungie's part, a well-intentioned effort to encourage primary use that maybe went a little too far. And I figured that it would be corrected in the next patch. When it wasn't, I realized what is probably going on here. I previously believed that the anger and frustration we experience when he lose our special was an unintended side effect. But when Bungie kept it, I had to recognize it for what it probably is: it's a weapon that is being used against us, a bludgeon intended to drive us into using our primaries. The reasoning is simple: I respect Bungie's intelligence. They're not stupid people. They understand gamer psychology, probably even better than I do (and I have a degree in psychology and 35 years of gaming experience, from Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to the sophisticated games of today). And leaving a change in place that generated this amount of anger and frustration among the players would not make sense unless said anger and frustration was part of the plan. It's classic negative reinforcement: apply an aversive stimulus (i.e. something the subject hates) until the undesired behavior (using special weapons) ceases to occur. When we make all nicey-nice and use our primaries, then our special ammo no longer matters, and the aversive stimulus self-terminates. That little tweak where it goes straight to our magazine when we pick it up is largely meaningless: losing it is still the problem. And Bungie's only reason for not solving the problem is that they don't regard it as a problem. As much as most of the players hate it, it's doing what it's supposed to do: driving people away from specials and towards their primaries. Bungie probably believes that in time, player outrage will fade and even the angry ones like me will ultimately accept the new meta and play the way they expect. Whether that happens or not is up to us.
