Being tolerant shouldn't require religion, but I'm glad you believe in tolerance. To be fair, though, the Bible isn't exactly tolerant of homosexuals.
Lev. 18:22 , "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." 2.Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them." 3.1 Cor. 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,1 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God." 4.Rom. 1:26-28, "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper."
• These verses are all OT as others have pointed out. We aren't supposed to follow those anymore. If you do then you haven't read the Bible.

You obviously know nothing about Christianity. Study the Bible before you try to talk Christianity

You just proved my point even more. Go read the Bible all the way through. The New Testament explains it. It's got nothing to do with believing. It's got everything to do with understanding which you clearly don't. Or if you're feeling lazy you can google some things. That works too. I bet someone else in here has actually explained it if you want to look for that. Edit: yep a guy has vaguely explained it in this same comment thread.

  • Those verses are calling out sins. Not telling us to go kill them. Nowhere does it say to be mean to them. Also if you had studied the original texts of the Bible you'd know that homosexuality is far more vague than what the texts say today. People's agendas have definitely been pushed by the translations now. Homosexuality is one of the points in the Bible that people make a big deal about for some reason. In the grand scheme it doesn't matter at all. I'm not sure why people worry about others so much. The whole remove the plank from your eye before worrying about the spec in your brothers thing. We are all too imperfect to go around accusing others of things that don't hurt people. Murder needs to be judged because people are getting killed but homosexuality doesn't do anything to anyone but the people who are homosexuals.

  • Well, I think people point it out because Christians have used religious text to justify persecution of homosexuals. To be fair, I don't think people anti-gay because of the Bible. They're simply hiding behind the verses to justify their opinions/actions.

  • Christians don't follow the old covenant (or at least aren't supposed to), and all references to homosexuality in the New Testament is in the context of adultery, or at least prostitution.

  • That last part is false. Neither of the two that OP posted are talking about Adultery. Tolerance doesn't mean you agree with the lifestyle, so you don't have to say that the Bible doesn't say that being gay is a sin, because it does. You just need to remember to love them, even though the have committed sins, because we all have. Doesn't make it ok, but we have to live with it.

  • I agree with the point of view that we shouldn't judge them and such, but from what I could find in the New Testament there are only three instances of homosexuality being mentioned, and none of them were objectively condemning it in all cases.

  • I'd say the above reference to 1 Corinthians pretty explicitly condemns it.

  • The translation used in that quote isn't accurate. The verse was referring to gay prostitutes, or Sodomites.

  • I've never seen a translation that makes it seem like it's only referring to gay prostitutes.

  • "Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God." From the New Revised Standard Bible.
My mistake in saying that they were listed as sodomites.
• Yes, but I feel like my language implied it listed gay prostitutes as sodomites, not directly mentioning gay prostitutes at all, but they were both listed and separately.

Also, the punishment verses are in regards to preserving the nation of Israel until the coming of Christ and to set them apart from other nations.

  • Jesus said it himself. He came to 'complete' the laws and prophecies of the Old Testament. Now I don't think I can properly describe exactly what he meant by this, but the gist is that the prophecies and laws are null. The rest of the Old Testament is still valid though.
