Honestly, like, 90% of the games you listed are the same copy/paste formula.
No wonder you're bored.
Open seems to be automatically good in people's eyes now - like it's the only way to play a game.
I've seen people brush off amazing games simply because they're linear.

That is mostly because of content, not a lot of gamers, specialy younger ones, can buy all games. Openworld games have a lot of content, you can play them for hours before completion, for a lot of gamers this has value. Thats why they are so populair.

Companies aren't making games because they empathise with people who can't afford to buy many.
Openworld games have a lot of content, you can play them for hours before completion, for a lot of gamers this has value. Thats why they are so populair.
Not always. It's almost always fluff. Open world games are full of crap that drags a game out. Gathering collectibles is not content. And yeah, they are popular - that's part of the problem. They are almost all the same.

I've also seen people do the same because a game doesnt have a coop or pvp

This times infinity and beyond plus one.

Yeah. Thinking I should limit what I buy this year. Most likely starting with Prey.

I'm always drawn to games that do something different, or have some kind of quirk. For all the love it's getting, I think Horizon just looks f*cking terrible. Everything about that game is just insanely cliché. From the graphics right down to the movement. Go out on a limb and play something that looks even a little risky. Most of it is insanely fun.

Like I said, I've been digging Half-Life's combination of combat, puzzles, platforming, and story recently. Now I've run out of content for that (though I'm currently somewhere in OpForce, which I never actually completed). On the puzzle-adventure side, which I've really dug since Myst in 2010, I backed Quern: Undying Thoughts on Kickstarter. It's not flawless, but it's got some interesting puzzles and an intriguing story so far. Rime also launches this year, and I've been meaning to pick up The Talos Principle for a long time. Could be a nice breather from MASSIVE OPEN WORLD WITH HUNDREDS OF ACTIVITIES THAT YOU'LL NEVER FINISH IN SEVERAL LIFETIMES AND CUSTOMISATION THAT YOU'LL GET BORED OF AFTER THREE MINUTES.

The Talos Principle is a great game if you like the Portal games.

Edited by Psyntifik: 3/15/2017 11:37:11 PMThose are some pretty good options! I'm looking forward to Rime! It looks so neat! Look into a game called Jotun. It's pretty cheap and full of character. And the narration is incredibly captivating. Just go crazy with it. Dive into new genres! There's an awesome game called A Blind Legend in which you play as a blind knight on a quest. The whole game is done with sounds - there's no visuals at all - and the game is so excellently done! It's stuff like this that I love about gaming, but they are so damn easily overshadowed. To be fair, even linear games can be copy/paste. TLoU, Uncharted and Tomb Raider all have the same formula, they just move at a different pace.

Ah. I have enjoyed Naughty Dog's efforts these last few years, definitely. Though modern Tomb Raider slots into this genre I'm tiring of. I'll have to check Jotun out.
Ah. I have enjoyed Naughty Dog's efforts these last few years, definitely.
I'm not discrediting the company. But I've tried TLoU and Uncharted three times and I just can't do it. Again, they're just full of cliches, that and I get really bored of games that try to be movies.
I'll have to check Jotun out.
Strongly recommended. It's the perfect game for people just stepping into the genre and for people who are up to their shoulders in it. A must play. Everything is hand drawn, too. The art style is fantastic.
