Anyone here done a degree in creative writing?

If so, what did it entail? What was the subject matter like? What was the content of the assignments and exams? What have you done with it? I'm vaguely considering one - I have an English language degree, but it's gotten me dick all so far. I've just been turned down for an apprenticeship in customer service at the local cinema (after 10 years in retail... maybe I'm overqualified, but I'd still prefer to work in a cinema than a supermarket), so I'm really looking down the barrel of hopeless underemployment here. On the plus side, I've self-published a fantasy novel (number 2 should be with us in November), and two short stories, and done a load of gaming news and critique articles with a variety of friends and informal news sites. The last few years, I've said to myself, I'd only ever go back into academia for creative writing. Question is: would it be worth it?

  • Why does one need a degree in creative writing? Why can't one just creatively write? It seems ludicrous to have to have a degree for conformation of ones skill. Creativity can't really be taught. Either people have it or don't.
