I can't trust any game stores anymore.

Because of a certain incident this afternoon, I don't think I can trust any more game stores that buy your shit for cash. Not even the non-franchise owned ones. I got crapped on over a deal today when I went to sell my old ps2 with all 26 of my games. (Memorize that number) I did some research on what games I had that were rare. Like I'm talking about the .hack G.U. series. VERY rare stuff for 80-90$ each. I went to the store that got recommended to me by my friend, and I took a look inside to see plenty of happy faces. I walk up to the counter, place my stuff on there and tell them I want to sell all of it. I give them a few minutes to look at it and come up with a good round number. What did they say? 10 GODDAMN DOLLARS. Because apparently there was an issue with the disc tray for my ps2, nothing major at all, just that the cover of the tray needed to be tapped to make it open up faster. They wouldn't take the system in. But they'd take all my games and the controllers for just 10$. "Shocked" is an understatement. "Furious rage of the gods" is about as close as it gets. I told them "you realize which games I've got...right?" They knew. But they stood by thier offer. I'm thinking either this guy is clueless about games are or he just doesn't care and wants to play me for a sucker. I told them to give me my stuff back, that this was bullshit and that they missed a good opportunity. I'm thinking I'd have better luck on Kijiji or Craigslist, cause those asshats don't know value when they see it.

  • Unless it's a specialty store, nobody gives a damn about your 15 year old games. No normal store is gonna wait for 3 to 5 years for somebody to pay $80 for a dead, outdated game when plenty of better, newer games cost less. Try selling them online directly to collectors who actually appreciate the rarity of those games.

    • You tried to sell something with no realistic value with the intention of getting its worth in sentimental value. Even if the ps2 games are rare, they are really only valuable to collectors at this points they would have 0 luck selling said games to your average Joe that walks in to get xb1 and ps4 games. The console as well is something that most people wouldn't even consider purchasing at this point. If you want to make the amount of money You expect off of them, you have to sell them yourself to willing collectors. This means it could take weeks, if not months to sell them to the right people, but it's really the only way to sell something with only sentimental value.

        • As a general rule, you will always have better luck selling rare and retro games and systems online rather than second hand stores who's employees are likely clueless when it comes to game values. Even if it's a gaming-centric store with knowledgeable staff, they will always offer less to maximize profit. EBay and Craigslist are pretty good, but it requires more time and effort as well as doing some homework first so you can get it done right.

        • Why would you even go there in the first place? There's literally no reason to go to a game store to trade in games now that we have this thing called THE INTERNET. They're basically pawn shops for games. They "have to make a profit" so they give you the bare minimum for your shit, fully intending to charge 10x what they gave you.

          • My brother bought one of those 360 slims when they came out, after only like 2 weeks he for some reason decided he didn't want it any more so he took it to game stop. They said $50 in store credit was the best they could do. He didn't sell it them.

          • You realize rarity of a game doesn't mean shit to game stores right? When you look that stuff up, it's only worth that much to certain people. Individually. Game stores don't care. If it's very old, you're not gonna get anything from it. That's why you should always sell your stuff online if you don't want it

          • If you think your games are worth more than go sell them somewhere else. This is a retail store, a store that has to resell all of your stuff to make money. Hate to break it to ya, but most people aren't looking for PS2 games when coming into a game store.

          • The reason they give you so little is because people will do it. It's much easier than selling them on your own and most of the time the games are worthless anyways. If you think the games are worth more then sell them for what you think they're worth. Chances are they're not worth that much and you won't find anyone interested.

          • What did you expect from ps2 games. Look how many games this gen has that are already $30. While you can sell it yourself and make more... it would also be hard for them to sell it anyways (because large retailer) people go online shopping for harder to reach items.

          • I don't bother selling games. You will almost never get a decent return from game stores unless you know someone personally.
Also I still play my old games, so there's that.
• If it's a major chain the guy at the counter has zero say in what your old games are worth. Corporate sets the buyback/trade prices and they are what they are. That's not to say that the guy wasn't hoping you'd sell some cool stuff on the cheap so he could buy them for the sell price that corporate set... ...with his employee discount factored on on top of that. Your far better off selling them on your own.
