I walked into my local Gamestop yesterday and they had a sign up that said they have reached their maximum amount of pre-orders for the Switch.

  • The console may do well at launch, but it's the months following that really determine how it's going to do. We'll know more when the network starts requiring payments.

  • I really don't understand why everyone lost their mind when Nintendo announced that you'll have to pay eventually for online, I mean how long has Sony and Microsoft charged for online play now? Also if you pay for online I heard you get cool perks like free virtual boy games each month

Nintendo's online infrastructure is about where Microsoft was with Xbox Live... on the original Xbox. And that is generous. So not only has Nintendo demonstrated that they are the most inept at delivering an online network, but they almost have no online games whatsoever. Add on top of that their free games don't stay with you after a month. Oh and a bunch of their online services will be on an app and not the console. A real genius plan.

  • The difference is that Microsoft and Sony have already established services worth paying for. Even when PlayStation first requiring payments for online multiplayer on the PS4, at least they had a decent setup previously on the PS3. With Nintendo, both the Wii and Wii U featured a pretty awful network that lacked some seriously needed features. To make it worse, Nintendo's free games program is pretty bad considering subscribers will not get to keep the games for longer than a month, unlike Games with Gold which lets players keep all 360 games forever and all X1 games with an active subscription.

  • Yes. Nintendo is in a situation where they need to go into this taking advantage of every possible opportunity they can get a win over the Playstation and Xbox. When I see such a shocking lack of self awareness I have to wonder what else Nintendo is bungling behind the scenes. When Sony went into the PS4 they executed it flawlessly. You got a sense that the guys running the show over there understood exactly what people wanted and how to deliver it. I still don't see that with Nintendo.
