Lets Talk About Vendors and the Legendary Marks Economy

I want to start a conversation about the currency loop, and therefore gameplay loops, that are being wasted in the game and what better place to start than the legendary marks. As it stands Legendary marks is pretty much worthless for most of the players. It seems a lot of us spend our time capped on marks and so we fill up our vaults with planetary resources we don't really need and that is the cycle of marks. Quite anti-climatic for something that was supposed to be an end game currency. Yes like all the others, but alas, that is a discussion for another place and another time. So back to the subject at hand. There are a couple of other places we can use our legendary marks. Primarily weapons and armors from the faction vendors. Now with the exception of a few good rolls most of those are pretty worthless and chances are you can get better, or already have, from random rolls. So while these offer you a place to throw away your marks right after an expansion, there is nearly no reasons to come back for seconds. A solution to this, and what I personally would like to see happen, would be to let the vendors restock their offerings again. To be frank I cannot fathom the reasoning behind Bungie removing this feature in the first place, but alas I was not part of that decision so I cannot really say either way. What I can do, is argue for how such a simple change can have a positive effect on parts of destiny's gameplay loop. Destiny is a Loot grinder. Yes it is an FPS. Yes it is an RPG. Yes it is a PVP game. However more than all of those it is a loot grinder, very much built in the veins of the Diablo formula. The point I am trying to make is that no matter what activity you choose to participate in while you are playing destiny, the end goal will almost always be about loot. Maybe you are still trying to increase your overall Light Level, maybe you want to get that strike specific shotgun or you are trying to make it to the lighthouse to get that cool sniper rifle. All these activities might be different in many ways, but they all have that one core thing in common. I personally think a weekly restock would make so many aspects of this game more interesting. First and foremost being, it would give your legendary marks a purpose again. Which in effect would make other weekly resets, like the daily heroic story mission etc., worthwhile again. Maybe there are dull weeks with nothing worthwhile, but then maybe some weeks have many good rolls and people would have to decide where they felt their marks where best spent. The most apparent effect of this is it would make people's weekly gameplay loops more worthwhile. Further more it would have the potential to make the pvp meta a bit more dynamic and with a lot less curvature. Lets get into this one a little bit. So since ROI the only vendor weapon to really affect the meta in any real way is probably the Palindrome. Yes the Crucible quartermaster has a great role on The Palindrome. Which is great for all of us that never managed to get a good roll on the Eyasluna. Now the Palindrome probably hasn't had the same effect on the meta as the inclusion of the Matador 64, but it's safe to say that you are more likely to see someone using the palindrome than you are to not see one. All of that is fine, it is not like the Palindrome is a godly weapon that cannot be countered. However lets say a month later, another good roll comes up on one of the vendors. Something that could compete with the palindrome. Surely we would see a lot of those around too, but not everyone that got the palindrome would want to change over to a different weapon. And suddenly we see a meta that has the potential to change more dynamically. I am sure I could get into more detail as to the effects I think this simple change would create, but I would like to see the discussion started before this turns into too much text. Do you think vendors should have a restock day? If so why? If not why? How many days do you think there should be between each restock day? a week? a month? and why? These are things I am interested in knowing and discussing. I doubt Bungie would listen to my, or even our, voice(s). Yet I still think it's a discussion worth having. Let us have at it.

  • It would be awesome if bungie started listening to what we actually want and need in the game. With a rotating stock it also should be noted that we don't just want the same guns re-rolled over and over. If one week Dead Orbit has no hand cannons and no LMG then it would be great if it had a chance for them to come up. Basically all vendors should have all archetypes in their inventory pool. One last thing the Gunsmith really needs to start selling some of the other foundry guns. I think we only see 4 of the 9? foundries being tested. Like Häkke is cool and all but where is Tex Mechanica? I'd love to see some great revolvers appearing.

    • Weekly restock is perfect, but it'll never happen. Bungie forces RNG to be the #1 way to find the best item... and what do you have to do to keep trying for the best RNG... you have to keep playing. You ever wonder why they got rid of re-rolling? It had nothing to do with the players re-rolling for the God roll, but it had everything to do with players not playing more to get that God roll. This game is a modern casino. Win you get something good, it's like hitting that slot machine. Lights go off and the sound makes you excited. RNG is the worst part of this game.

      • Weekly is too often. Your experience is heavily biased as a player with ample time to play and earn marks.

        • Bump! Personally would support weekly reroll of vendor weapons. Marks are useless at the moment. And having the same weapons for months, makes the game terribly stale.

        • Legendaries are just useless with how light level progression works. They just want you waste all your time grinding. Game is a broke gambling mess.

          • Wednesday is armsday. Every Wednesday not only does the gunsmith give us new weapons available for both collection and order, but the vendors receive new stock as well. I see no reason for this not to happen, to be honest.

              • I'd be fine with a restock ever week or two A week would make more sense since everything else is weekly Every 2 weeks is a little kinder. Since if you're on vacation for a week and come back to find you missed out on a god roll weapon you'd lose your mind. That second week would provide a cushion.
To be frank I cannot fathom the reasoning behind Bungie removing this feature in the first place
They never did. Vanilla gear was the exact same gear as the beta. TTK gear was the exact same rolls for the entirety (until the short period before RoI). The only time a vendor refreshes armor/weapon rolls is on an expansion release. That said, a weekly/bi-monthly refresh would be a nice addition.

We've asked Bungie to rotate vendor stock weekly since vanilla (they have reset timers for -blam!-s sake). Why Bungie won't is beyond me (except it's not, they want us to suffer thru RNG drops that never drop) Currently they also have vendors capped at 390 drops because who the -blam!- knows why. So not only are bounties completely obsolete at end game, there's literally no reason to spend glimmer or marks other than to stockpile mats to level faster next LL increase (that they don't want us leveling fast so they do shit like cap faction LL drops). It all makes glorious sense, if you're slightly insane.

                    • Weekly restock benefits the players who are on top of things, but punishes anyone who doesn't immediately grab god rolls. Similarly, Legendary Mark economy is nonexistent for the players at the bleeding edge of endgame (raids, trials), but plays a big part for those aren't still grinding up to vendor gear. It just so happens that most of us finished that stage in a few days because we no-life.

                        • I'm not sure if anyone suggested this as there are a few replies; How about they let us spend the legendary marks on the vendor weapons available and have the set roll for this rotation but have the opportunity to select the gun with an RNG roll as well so atleast you are getting the the gun you want but with some of the grind for legendary marks left intact and not flooding the game with stagnant God rolled weapons each week?

                          • Vendors should reset so we get some variety. I would say every three weeks is good, or the week before iron banner. I'm speculating here, my guess as to why they don't reset now is because bungie uses those rolls as a marker to encourage players to try the gun and then if they like that gun, then grind for hours to get a different roll. For a while at the end of year 1 Bungie let us reroll legendary guns. But that was taken away because the crucible was.....well the crucible....where in a world of guns players rerolled till they got that one god roll of the same gun everyone else was using and that was pretty much it. I am guessing here that bungie doesn't want players to stop grinding for rolls they like because internally as a company they are rewarded for how many players are online and how long they play per session. This is a number that companies use to justify servers, resources, devs, bonuses etc.. Many of bungies choices are dictated by business models and game theory and formulas to keep people playing, I am guessing the vendors is one of these.

For the love of god, finally someone posts about this. What good does it do the community, having a static set of stock for entire DLC's?! Seriously its a god damn joke and it makes zero sense. Weekly resets on guns and daily resets on armor and mat donation type would be great imo. Edit; I also strongly support the idea of having one of EACH AND EVERY WEAPON TYPE available at each of the three major factions, + the vanguard and crucible vendors. I still have the 3 OG scout rifles that New Monarchy, Dead Orbit, and Future War Cult sold on day 1. But New Monarchy has not had a new scout since TDB. And it really bugs me.

                                  • I like the restock idea. I think weekly restocked would be fair; give people enough time to buy something they see that looks good, and refresh often enough that you see (hopefully) weekly shifts in crucible meta.
