This is even a problem with groups. Me and my step father ran it with 2 others in perfected had the boss half hp when we all died not I spawned in just as the last man died. The door took so long to open that even having spawned as the last man died we still didn't get it

If you use the key and then someone dies it will continue

Wrong, if you use the key but the 15 seconds has passed since there was no alive guardians in the event it ends.
