Because generally speaking kids are lousy hero's. They work in the movies because everyone roots for the underdog. You making a character young gives the impression you yourself are young. There is also when you are young you think you are invincible.

I have nine characters - so I've spaced out their ages accordingly. Ashraven is actually my youngest character. I believe Tormod is my oldest, somewhere between late thirties and early fourties.
