I was under the impression that the 9 were all the original Iron Lords, like the knights of the round table in King Arthur. He had an army of knights, but those were his elite force and inner circle.

Wasn't the concept of Arthur round table that everyone meet in a circle as not just a symbol of unity but a symbol of equality? I was always under the impression that all Arthur's Knights had a place at the round table (sadly not the foot solders). The title "Iron Lords" suggests that are all equal, there are no "Iron Soldiers" that I know of. Iron Lords, like the Guardians, are really all equal (but my Guardian has to be ranked higher as I killer Crota, Oryx and stopped SIVA, I don't know you guys where doing maybe picking your noses as we can't have all kill them ;P ). yes there is the three Guardian commanders in the tower but apart from them the Guardian hierarchy is very flat and the Iron Lords would seem to have a similar structure. Anyway it seems odd to me that while hundreds of Iron Lords died in the Plaguelands, the suggested founders of the Iron Lords all somehow made it through, and only them, that seem to defy probability.

Technically speaking, he had more knights. The round table was his closest group of friends. As for equality, tge guys at the table were equals, not the others.
