Replacing router - which one works best with Destiny?

Which router is recommended for the most "trouble free" Destiny experience? I'm on Verizon FIOS and recently "cut the cord" on cable TV. Doing this means I no longer have to use an Actiontech *MOCA router to split the different lines from the fiber... but now I can just use a regular router and handle the data. While I know many / most issues can be fixed with the Network support guide, I also wouldn't be surprised that Destiny is more.... sensitive to some routers over others. Considering we still get people saying "I'm hard-wired with X setup and still get errors". I've been mostly trouble free for 2 years. I'm probably leaning towards a Nighthawk or an Asus. * Yeh MOCA is a pain in the neck. Check DSL Reports... if you wanted to use a nice router AND have TV signal on Verizon FIOS, it was a PitA to setup with some multi-router setup and bridge'ing.

  • My Asus RT-AC66 has been running like a champ for about two years. Keep the firmware current on it...well, within at least one release of the latest. Don't check it too religiously....maybe every other month or so or if I have long Windows Update cycles on the laptops. Might want to make sure the one you get supports open source firmwares (tomato, Merlin, DD-WRT, etc.). Saw a thread recently where moving to open source resolved that user's local LAN multiple console issue. Could be nice to have that as an option for testing things out down the line.

  • I'm running 3 xbox ones and 2 360's on a Nighthawk X8. No issues at all.

    • I've used the net gear nighthawk x6 before, it's expensive but it's a monster. Never had issues other than when bright house would throttle our bandwidth to zero and/or change net codes on us and force us to reboot to get access to online again... short of the story... avoid bright house at all costs. They suck. Night hawk is great though. Crazy good range on the wifi too. Destiny on a 5Ghz band is buttery smooth (minus the crap Bungie servers that is)... which I find impressive for wifi.

    • I use a Netgear Nighthawk AC3200 (R8000) with Tomato Firmware 1.28.0000 -137 K26ARM USB AIO-64K. The wireless on this router is really good. I had a problem with uPnP and local fire teams for a few weeks but figured it out. I didn't try Destiny with the factory firmware.

    • "These are not the droids you're looking for." Do NOT get Asus! NetGear or Linksys work fine for me. Nighthawks are great too ^_^
-QA Test Engineer (a.k.a. AR IS4 NUBS)
• Nighthawk is great. Has more bands so you can dedicate one to your console and the rest of the house can go nuts streaming garbage and it won't affect you. It also works if you have more consoles. Each console connects on its own band. I've tried telling people about this in regards to multiple players/same network issues but do they ever listen? Nope.

      • Anything that doesn't run NAT-TYPE 3. The other reply seems good too. If you have the option to not use type 3, don't.
