Guardians and Immortality

Heyo everyone. Muzzy here with a lore theory regarding how Guardians' immortality works. For some time, it has been theorized that Guardians are immortal, meaning that they do not age. And this makes sense. After all, if a Ghost can completely rebuild a Guardian's body, even after disintegration, it stands to reason that they can repair/replace and aging or dying cells. But as of today, with the first Iron Banner of the Rise of Iron expansion, we see this confirmed in the new Iron Banner quest: In Pursuit of Light.
After I left the Banner, my agelessness felt like a burden. -Efrideet
So we now know for a fact that Guardians don't age. So why does Efrideet sound so much younger than Saladin when they've both been alive for at least 400+ years? I think that the age of a Guardian is entirely dependent upon how old they were when they first died. If you were in your early sixties when you died, your Ghost would revive you with the appearance of of sixty year-old. This makes sense, given that there is a Titan class item called the 'Old Man's Mark.' This could support why you are able to give your Guardian gray hair. Efrideet was revived in what were most likely her early twenties, explaining why she has such a young voice. But what do you guys think? Think this theory makes sense, or is it all a bunch of baloney? Let me know in the comments. Become Legend, Guardians. Muzzy, out.

  • interesting. I do have a sily question though, are all Guardians revived dead people, or are some those who grew up and decided to become one?

    • I am in the prime of my life, and I'd be more useful now that when I was younger. I'm a successful business, got a great family, and I believe my family and company would still be around by the time I am revived by these thing. Folks the wall that you see is thanks to my original wall, without me these so called titans wouldn't have a wall architectural gift to begin with.

      • Here's another thing I want to bring into this discussion, if they resurrect a guardian, do the guardians still have memories of their past lives? It'd be interesting to see Bungie make a quest or dlc that Diggs into that. Maybe you could visit the guardians old home before the collapse you walk up and have horrible flashbacks of what happened there. Maybe the quest would give you an exotic gun or piece of armor or an artifact. That the guardian used to own before their deaths.

        • Another thing to keep in mind; humans in the Destiny universe live much longer than we do. If Saladin and Efrideet lived before the collapse they weren't our regular life span. Humans had lived triple our lifespan thanks to the Traveler. My information is kinda fuzzy, so if anyone has any corrections or clarifications, I welcome them.

I was just wondering if anyone ever thought about weather people born before the golden age for instance what if a ghost found George Washington's grave and thought he would be a good guardian. Just a though i'd like some other options though.

What you guys need to understand is anyone (re)born in light is biologically immortal. They don't age, or die of natural causes, only physical ones.

            • Well I wouldn't say they aren't immortal since some died throughout the story, I think the best way to say is that they just don't age. They're like vampires they don't age but still don't die no matter what unless with specific attacks. If they were truly immortal they would never die no matter what whichhh seems to be whem the light is taken from their ghost (in the early missions on the moon) or in regular ways? Like the Rise of Iron squad.

              • Makes perfect sense, moving along.
Also, Saladin mentions the Iron Lords having "immortality but not wisdom". It seems that Guardians are normally immortal as long as the ghosts can resurrect them, those who fell to SIVA were too corrupted to raise. Falling in a darkness zone is a special case, the darkness smothers the ghost and overpowers its ability to raise you; this is why you need someone else to revive you during Nightfall etc.
I mean I've basically taken the idea that Guardians were immortal as fact sense it released. What you say about the Ghosts is probably a fact as well. I'm just wondering why if you thought they were immortal, why did you think they would age?

                    • Maybe it's based on the age when you were touched by the light. I'm sure the Traveler didn't just appear and pick only people between 20 and 30 or 50 and 60. I would presume that Guardians were chosen based on their potential.

                        • Wait a min. Aren't we the darkness? Most of the travelers gifts(ghosts) initiated with the start of the war with the "supposed" darkness on Earth. A guardians gifts only get stronger the more "enemies" we kill and take out. For all we know, we're all fighting for Dart Vader. Sure a guardian is immortal, but his will is taken by ghost the minute he brings his body back to life. Living 400+ years and watching your buds die(again) must take a toll on your hairline. Lord Saladin's hair grayed out exactly like Romilly(Interstellar) did after 21+ years of stressful days. 🤔 hmm..

This might also answer why we don't see any fat Guardians. Every Guardian has a six pack and less than 1% body fat. If the ghosts have the ability to restore cells to an earlier stage, it stands to reason they'd be able to make Guardians buff. But Guardians themselves wouldn't be able to generate body mass on their own because they don't need to eat. This also means that Guardians would be able to adjust their bodily features at will, changing their appearance, voice, hair color, sex, etc.

                            • I collaborated with my daughter on a fan-fiction writing exercise that included Destiny and I came up with an idea that's relevant to this discussion. I posited that ghost resurrection is what keeps guardians as seemingly "immortal" as they are. They don't seem to need to eat or sleep or even rest, can't really recall their past, because they are constantly "new" entities, built from the entropy of their old, deceased form. In my tale, a guardian walked away from the fight to live peacefully and alone, and as the months and years went by he slowly started to need to eat and shit and sleep, developed other emotions and relationships, started to remember his past. In this situation he began to fear death as much as any "normal" person because he feared he'd lose the "humanity" he had regained. He also began to suspect his ghost of trying to get him killed, to get him "back on the program", and that was a whole other narrative twist. I like the idea, but it seems to fly in the face of what Bungie presents here, as Saladin has evidently not seen a lot of action over the course of centuries and he still hasn't aged and seems as focused and detached as other guardians are. I do agree that guardians seem to not just be immortal, but bereft of physical needs outside of absorbing Light. It's a wonder they aren't all mad and suffering PTSD, considering they are little more than walking talking instruments of war with no agency or private lives of their own, seemingly anyway.

                                • It may date back before their first death, it might be when they were considered 'touched' by the travellers light. Maybe at that point your body ceases to age , or succumb to illness and instead simply exists, which woulf also put thorn and its 'poisoning' into questions since they are immortal but I wont dive into that mess.
