Nope. Greatest example of a community hyping itself into a frenzy beyond all reason...convincing themselves that they were promised thigns that they weren't.... ...then getting mad about their NOT being things in the game that devs NEVER promised that their would be. Those who followed the game's development and kept their expectations grounded, got the game they were expecting. Now whether or not that game was to yoru personal taste or not.....that's a different story.

Don't give me that bullshit. I've followed the games development since 2012, and they did not meet even half of their own expectations, let alone my expectations.

  • Then you weren't following that carefully. Because there are hours of video on YT with him playing demos of the game and telling interviewers that it was going to be: 1. A solo game in a shared universe 2. Any chance of running into another player would be extremely unlikely 3. That the game was going to be an exploration and survival game. Not Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen. Which is clearly what some people wanted this game to be so desperately that they convinced themselves that it was going to be.

  • 1. Yeah. They did this. 2. You mean impossible? The games code has been checked, their is nothing suggesting that you can meet anyone 3. This is such a broad term. Yeah, they technically did most of this, but it's not that great.

...and what you do after you saw that person. See...that's the question that people like you can never answer...because you HAVE no answer. Because there are NO examples---other than that ambiguous reference to "griefing" that can be twisted by someone to mean whatever the hell they want----of him promsing that there would be any inter-player GAMEPLAY. None. This is all about wanting to assign blame rather than taking responsibility for having made a poorly informed buying decision. Saw a guy streaming NMS this morning...and some smartass asked him in chat if he was going to get a refund. The guy said, "Hell I've gotten a hundred hours of play out of this game. Why the hell would I be looking to get my money back?!?!"

  • Actually, there's a huge reddit post about all of the things that were promised and didn't deliver. The game was a huge lie. Glad I called hype back when I first heard about it. I knew it would flop.

  • Half the things on the list are in the game. It's just so big that you don't come across it very often. Srry you can't land on an asteroid I guess. Rotating moons and planets would be cool, but it wouldn't even be noticeable if they were there. And I guess you can cry about no multiplayer

I don't need to read someone else's misinterpretations. I've seen those kinds of claims . Problem is that I actually saw most of those interviews myself, or saw him give the same stock answers in other interviews. Taken in context----especially with the hundreds of hours of GAME PLAY FOOTAGE they put out there on YT months before the game released (a fact that such posts always seem to conveniently overlook) --- their meaning was clear. You were playing a solo game of exploration is shared universe that was so large that you would likely never even run into another human player. This is not about a dev lying. This is about some people not knowing how to be reasonable, responsible consumers....and blaming others for the consequences that result from it.

  • It literally lists what he said was going to be in the game and what didn't actually show up in the game. And everyone of them had a YouTube link to Sean Murray saying it would be in the game and then never being in the game. It literally doesn't matter what you think because facts are facts. I do agree that the game was extremely overhyped though and I am very glad I never fell in that trap. I've always asked "what the hell do you do in the game? Just explore and that's it? No other purpose besides explore and survive?"

See the link below where I link nearly 25 minutes of gameplay that was done as a live walkthrough with IGN. This is from April. A full four months before the game released, and plenty of time for people to assess any preorders. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-uMFHoF8VA What people are doing is that they are IGNORING hundreds of hours of demo gameplay like this, and live interviews where he carefully, and transparently describes the game. To focus on a few, ambiguous, out-of-context statements. That they then TWIST to mean whatever it is they want them to mean. The fact is there has never been a marketing campaign THIS transparent in the history of gaming. Facts without CONTEXT are meaningless, and easily manipulated. In fact one of the most effective ways to deceive people is to bury a lie in a small amount of truth. Beause only thing more vicious than lies....are half-truths. And the number of half-truths being put out there about this man, and how he introduced this game to us are LEGION..and they are all coming from the "community". People who don't know how to be mature, responsible consumers...and want to blame HIM for what THEY failed to do before spending their money. ...and for anyone who did their HOMEWORK, the answer to your question is pretty clear. You explore. You survive. You trade, fight and interact WITH NPCs while trying to find your way to the galactic center. That is what Murray has ALWAYS said what the game was about. People just don't -blam!-ING listen. Then get mad about the fact THEY didnt' listen.

  • Seen it...and and other ones like it. ..and they're all crocks. Like I said. A handful of ambiguous statements that people took out of context...and then twisted into meaning what they wanted them to mean. The only way to NOT get a clear idea of what this game was going to be with the video I linked was to either have NEVER WATCHED IT...or to have SLEPT THROUGH IT.

  • Lol how is it a crock? It blatantly shows Murray saying what was going to be in the game and then shows the list of things that weren't in the game. I'm not disagreeing with you about everything. I know hype was a huge part of it, but there's no doubt about it that Sean Murray lied about alot of things. That's another reason as to why steam and Sony are accepting refunds. Or were. Same with Amazon. If it was all hype it would be all our fault and no refunds would've been accepted. You have to admit that he lied about alot of things which is why the refunds were accepted. I couldn't care less about the whole thing because I knew for a fact it wasn't going to be a game for me. Unfortunately he needed to be much much more clear about what the game was going to hold and they needed to show alot more and go into alot more depth. They kept alot of secrets about the game that had red flags from the start. I'd say 50% hype and 50% Sean Murry lying and even over exaggerating things. But whatever. Not my problem I was just pointing out evidence and facts about what actually happened. We as a community need to stop hyping up every single game that's going to come out and just play it without knowing too much about it. If it's something you're interested in, fine, play it. If not, don't pick it up. But don't listen to what everyone else says about it because 9 times out of 10, it's just a bunch of overhyped bullshit that people make up in their minds to make it sound like it's going to be the best game ever.

How is it a crock? CONTEXT. You are doing what political attack ads do all the time. They take some innocuous or ambiguous statement made by a candidate.. They take it OUT of the context in which it was made.... ..then then TWIST it to make it sound worse than it is....and insists that it means WHATEVER they want it to mean. Then count on people NOT to do the work to understand what was actually being said, and what was actually meant AT THAT TIME. Propaganda works the same way. The CONTEXT of those statements are the HUNDREDS of hours of interviews and game play demos that Murray did----some of which I've linked---where he very clearly and very carefully and very TRANSPARENTLY goes over what the game IS...and what to expect from it. But instead of watching those videos, the ADHD generation gets its information other people who are just as poorly informed as they are. The problem becoming that these half-truths or exaggerations get repeated back and forth so often that they become the defacto "truth". Because even the most CURSORY search of YT for NMS demo game play yields HOURS of interviews like I've linked...and HOURS of game play showing exactly what the game ultimately was. But people can't be bothered. Then when they get something they didn't imagine...then they rage and accuse. Like spoiled children. Rather than looking in a mirror and pointing the finger at the person ultimately responsible.

Sean Murray outright lied. He said there would be limited multiplayer in the game and there's none to be seen. ~ Nyahh! =^,.,^=

  • No he didn't. I've seen him give that same answer in a number of interviews. Each time(in context) it's clear that he's referring to the fact that the game takes place in a shared universe ( which it does) and each time (in context) he emphasized that such a meeting would be extremely unlikely to occur. You just have a lot of kids who twisted these statements into what the wanted to believe. Had he actually lied then I wouldn't have expected the game they actually delivered or been scratching my head wondering why he was trying to explain what the game was days before it was released when it was obvious that's what it was going to be from the hundreds of hours of in-game footage that could be found via the most basic of searches on YouTube.

  • The meeting did occur though. On the first day. To which they both couldn't see each other even though they were at the exact same place on the same Planet. I agree most things have been taken out of context, but his statement about the only way you'll be able to see what you look like is if you find another player is completely misleading as there's no possible way to ever find another player. Just their discoveries. The only 'shared' thing is a database, nothing more.

  • Not according to the game. If you read the details of the situation, the two people contacted each other and communicated OUTSIDE of the game. But this is a game which can be played both off-line...and on-line. ...and both parties acknowledged that when they were on the same planet that the day-night cycles were not synced up. So---from an in-game perspective----they were NOT there at the same time in the game universe. Even though they may have been there at the same time in OUR universe. But this gets RIGHT back to the root issue. That statement is NOT a promise of "multiplayer" game play...and the core game experience is not altered ONE BIT by whether that feature is in the game or not. I can't believe people are acting like this.

  • I didn't mention anything about the statement being a promise of multiplayer. Also, just because it doesn't directly affect the core game, doesn't mean we should just forget it was ever said. Dont get me wrong, there has been a massive over reaction and a lot of what Sean Murray has said has been taken way out of context, but that doesn't excuse him on the point I'm making. I like the game. I knew what I was buying, I understood that it was not a MP game, it's actually one of the selling points to me. But his statement about meeting other players is a blatant lie. He said the only way to know what you look like is for someone else to see you. Stephen Colbert then asks him 'can you run into other players' and he said yes but it's extremely rare. Now how can we run into other players if they only thing we connect to when we are online is their database? You can pause this game at ANY time, even in the pause menu (discoveries etc) it still tells you that you are connected to their servers so it doesn't disconnect you when the game is paused. Simply put, there is no possible way to meet another player as the function doesn't actually exist. Therefor, hes talking out of his ass on this occasion.
