I think the guardian is THE guardian, I.e. You. Just you from another timeline, timecycle. It's a little like that film Triangle.
I also reckon the person The Stranger is talking to is The Guardian, too.

I imagine not many people have seen Triangle. I liked it but it was sort of low budget. If it were like Triangle there'd be lots of bodies there, right?

We are constantly time travelling in the game, repeating the same missions and battles over and over again until we get the outcome we desire (victory and loooooooot).. Could be.... :)
